Engine knock w/ VIDEO!!!

I have a 2003 600rr with just over 20k on her, I recently changed the oil with Mobile 1 Fully Synthetic and have developed a HORRIBLE engine knock. I first noticed it about a week ago when I heard a "rattle" coming from the clutch side of the motor. I thought maybe my clutch was dieing but it doesnt slip, still goes into gear, and feels the same as it did prior to the "rattle" noise. I went down the street to the gas station yesterday to fill up the tank, and all of a sudden the "rattle" turned into a constant "knock" ..it almost sounds like a valve slapping the piston..FML.. So I pulled over and called a buddy to have her towed back to the house to prevent further damage. I've read alot of info regarding the stock CCT failing and ordered the APE manual tensioner last night. As soon as it gets here Im going to install and see if it fixes my problem, but I took a video in the meantime to see if anybody else has ever heard a noise similiar to mine? Im hoping I didnt do any major damage to the motor, but from the way it sounds im a little scared lol

^^ thats the video

What maintenance has been done over the course of the bike's life? I'll watch the video once it processes.

I've had it for just over 3 years, She's garaged kept, had regular oil changes, just replaced the fork seals last season, i've kept up on the maintenance for the most part but the previous owner took her to the track once in a while and commuted so she's been ridden but not THAT hard.. I hardly ever take her to redline, I'll clutch up a wheelie once in a while but thats about it.. She just started knocking out of nowhere!

You never checked the CCT, timing, or valve clearance at the correct intervals?

To be honest i havent checked any of that.. I never had a problem she has ran flawless since the day I got her. I only ride during the summer/springtime and just kept up on the oil changes, kuld be a fatal mistake on my part.. I will be checking the timing when I replace the CCT hopefully this weekend.

I'm going to be completely honest with you, as a Honda tech. Find another engine for $1000 or so and throw it in your bike after inspecting it.

that doesn't really sound like a loose cam chain.
although it's probably not a good idea to start up the bike, check the headers and see if the heat is equally displacing through all four cylinders to the headers. you might be able to tell if one cylinder gets hotter then the others first, or doesn't get as hot. that way you might be able to tell what cylinder the knocking is happening from reduced or increased friction. I can't think of anything else from that video.

spun bearing. Sounds close to what mine did on my old RR when I ran without oil for about a mile

I found an 06 engine with 2k miles and swapped it in my 04 for $650

wow they sound almost identical...I wuz really hoping I wouldnt have to do all that! I thought I might have spun a rod bearing at first too but I just didnt want to believe it! lol How much would it be for a repair? I know i'm probably better off replacing the whole thing but i dont have a clue where I could get my hands on another motor? Probably be cheaper to swap it out huh?

its going to def be cheaper to swap it out. you can do it yourself with very little tools, and you will get to learn a lot more about your bike.

check ebay, stuntlife, craigslist, and the classifieds here on the .net for a new engine. Ive heard people getting them for dirt cheap on ebay. I hunted forums like a velociraptor for a week before I found the price for the 06 kit I bought. I also picked it up, saving a lot in shipping...

and a tip- if you do find one on a forum that is going to ship it, I heard fast-en-all (spelling?), ship large items from location to location for VERY cheap, like 45 bucks or something

good luck

At best it would be a spun bearing. Really sounds like it, but could also be a broken valve. Can't really pin point a cost unless you tear open the engine and find the extent of the damage.

Definitely cheaper to swap the engine out and sell your current one for cheap or part it out. There's racers who would buy it for parts or to fix up as a spare built motor.

Ok guys thanks for the advice, I'm hunting for a new engine as we speak.. lol With the 05-06' I would need the wiring harness too huh? and what about the ignition sytem? Will my current key start the new motor i'm going to put into it? I'm fairly confident I kan swap my motor out im pretty good with a wrench!
