anyone ever experienced this?



it started happening way last year at a trackday, the revs would drop then come back instantly. it only happened a couple of times & maybe once or twice on the road, then no issues for a few months. one day last week I done about 60 miles, the first 40 were fine, stopped for a break, then for last 20 miles, the bike was dropping revs the whole time. just constantly jerking & lunging, low revs, high revs, accelerating, constant throttle. now its doing this just sitting at idle.

at first I thought I picked up some bad fuel that day, but I have since run a cleaner through it with fresh fuel & its still doing it.

I haven't stripped the bike down yet, I will be doing this next weekend. the plugs were new 2000 miles ago & I'm pretty sure nothing is kinked as it was running fine until we stopped for a break.

so anyone have any possibilities? it's just one thing after another at the moment

not a pro, but im guessing its the idle control system, there is some hoses bypassing the tb when in neutral, idle, or when clutch is pulled in and throttle closed (i think). check the hoses, valve and other parts of that system

will this issue show up on a diagnostic from a dealer? I can't be arsed stripping it all down again & digging around to find it

problem solved.

turns out I must have forced a connector with the install of the QS, which bent one of the prongs. it must have had just enough of a connection to work all this time but, with the increased use lately, it must have come loose or something.

now I just have to rebuild the front end & I'm good to go.

I formally declare myself a dumb a$$

problem solved.

scratch that, it's still f**ked. it run perfectly on the stands, no dips or stutters at all. put the bike back together, jumped on, started it up, rough idle!

rode about 3 miles, bike was kicking & dipping all over, felt like a f**king bucking bronco.

pulled the plugs, they all look fine, I'll pick up a multimeter this week to check other possibilities :gun1::banghead:

What kind of qs do you have? It may be activating due to vibration on the lever
its the annitori rs. that's something I hadn't even considered, I'll go check the lever now, it may have worked it's way loose

no dice. I just run the bike on the paddock stands, the idle held steady & wiggling the gear lever did nothing. I revved up to 6k rpm with no dips at all, just like last night. it wasn't til I had the bike on the side stand that it started running rough again. could this be an issue with the BAS?

Try bypassing the bas. Just unplug it and shove a paper clip in the connector jumpering the two outside pins. Worth a shot but seems unlikely

found my easy fix

I've got absolutely no reason/excuse/defence for missing this. :banghead:

this is the ground wire for the QS which was tucked under the tank cover & had somehow worked its way down & got pinched (problem at trackday) & eventually snapped (on the last run) & was shorting against the frame.

UNBELIEVABLE!!! remember the basics people!!

I've assumed the worst because that's how my luck usually goes & completely overlooked the most basic part of troubleshooting electrics, even my girlfriend called me a twat lol

Well, NASA lost a $125 million dollar Mars orbiter because half the team worked in metric, and the other half in English, put the mission together and never discovered this until the spacecraft was trying to enter orbit around Mars, with this quoted result:

"That probably stopped the engine from completing its burn, so Climate Orbiter likely plowed through the atmosphere, continued out beyond Mars and now could be orbiting the sun, he said."

So in the end, your little oversight was really nothing compared to ending up orbiting the sun for $125 million dollars! :)

Glad you got this sorted, everybody needs to be VERY aware of where they run wires, because there is also LOTS of attention needed to make sure the coil loom wires are not having this same problem...
