Was doing some work on the bike had the bike connected to a battery on the bench with leads one of my mates dropped a spanner and shorted the system... battery was smoking.. bike will now not start and the fi light flashes 3 long flashes 5 short flashes, code 35.. any guys have this problem and can point me in the direction for the right repair?

If 2007+ model.....

3L-5S = EGCV servomotor malfunction.

check the exhaust flapper valve, cables and motor drive system for a loose/poor connection OR circuit malf. OR motor/valve stuck.

The EGCV valve is cycled open/closed/open on startup.

if it can't make full O-C-O range it throws a code on MIL.

EGCV does not affect starting.


does the bike attempt to crank? like it will crank over but not fire?

when you toggle the kill switch does the FI lamp come on for a few seconds?

does the pump prime? neutral light on?


you need to give us information. saying "my bike won't start" is not going to get you any results.

Ok, so the bike doesn’t attempt to crank. When I turn the key into ignition I get everything. Neutral/lights everything pump primes, when the pump stops priming I get the fi light. It then continually goes through the sequence of 3 long flashes followed by 5 short flashes. When I press the start button nothing happens. I’ve checked all fuses next step was to change the relays over and see if it could have damaged the FI relay while shorting out.

If the Fi lamp comes on the engine stop relay is fine. The kill switch is fine, the bank angle sensor is fine.

If the pump primes then the Pump relay is fine and likely the ecu as well.


Do your headlights come on with the key? The start button is on the headlight circuit.

It could very well be that your buddy shorted the wiring at the starter relay. He may have damaged the wiring to the egcv at the same time. They are nearby each other


Does the bike start if you bridge the large wires at the starter relay?

Ok so I swapped and checked the other relays and all were ok, ignition on and bridged the starter relay. She fired up and runs but the fi light stays flashing with the code now! Reckon the starter relay needs replaced to rectify the starting issue!

it's either the relay itself or a problem in the circuit. either a broken wire or maybe a melted wire.

the signal wire to the starter relay is a yellow/red, the ground from the starter relay goes to the diode in the fusebox, then to ground via the neutral switch.


if you want, try to put 12v on the yellow/red at the starter relay (just use a jumper wire from +12v), if the bike cranks then you have an issue with the power circuit to the start button (headlight circuit)

if the bike doesn't crank, try connecting the green/red at the starter relay to ground. then try to start it normally. if it starts then you have an issue with your diode (or your neutral switch)


if the dash indicates neutral then i doubt it's the neutral switch, so it may be the diode.

Thanks! Its too late to be doing that tonight but I'll be trying those two things tomorrow as soon as I'm home from work! Thanks so much for help I'll let you know how I get on.

Ok wibbly, we have made a bit of progress tonight! So first thing I did was put a positive onto the relay feed (red/yellow) bike fired up. Put a negative over the diode wire.. bike fired up on the button! Then the bike fired up on it's own without the connecting wire! Then it wouldnt do anything on the diode but would still fire from the relay feed! My thoughts are that the diode is gone would this cause it to not work from the button? I might add that the neural light/headlights are all ok.

The start button puts 12v onto the yellow/red

If putting 12v onto the yellow red manually runs the starter then you don't have power feeding your start button

The start button is fed from the headlight circuit. So check that


If the diode were gone the start button would only work with the kickstand up and the clutch switch pulled.

Ok, so the headlight circuit seems good I'm getting all lights. When I press the start button the lights dip as its drawing power but no start. With the stand up and clutch in I get nothing still

The lights dip because the start button turns them off. This is intentional and is supposed to happen. It has nothing to do with drawing power.


Get a multimeter and check for 12v on the yellow/red when you press the start button.

Ok so I have stripped the switch. I'm getting a feed into the switch and a feed out but not at the relay so theres a break in the cable somewhere

There you go. Easy fix...

Chances are when you find the damage you'll find the egcv issue as well

So I have located the broken wire and I've found when I joing the break and start the bike the fault code clears!

Well I fitted the repaired start/stop harness and the bike now starts but the same fault code is flashing!
