Are there any How-To's on how to change the front fork oil? My bike is all apart for the winter and its got like 26k milez and figured it would be a good time to do a lil maintenance.

^its more of a mental how to. altho im thinking of making a diy write up soon. as soon as i get some fork parts in.

I got an 04 BTW. Is it generally a good idea to change the seals at the same time? Mine are not leaking at all, and i don't really want to mess with them if they are still good. Does the fork oil start to break down and lose some of its..i dont know....suspension properties?

yes the oil gets dirty which will cause more friction. just replace the fork seals at the same time. otherwise u will be fixing them down the road.

on inverted forks, no. u can just remove the caps and drain the old oil and replace it.

on the older forks tho i think u have to at least slide the seal out to change the oil. conventional forks are very easy to work on. easier than the new style forks.

Yes fork oil does start to break down and lose its "suspension properties". If you just want to change the oil then it is pretty easy. While you have your forks out of bike, I would change your oil seals just as preventative maintenance (they arent that expensive). Also get some really good oil, also you should take this opportunity to realize that this is the perfect chance to tune your suspension better. For example I run a heavier weight fork oil that helps towards stiffining your suspension by slowing the hydraulic damping. I switched to 7.5 weight from 5 weight. Make sure you also use a high quality synthetic oil, I use Motul fully synthetic 7.5wt race oil and I would recommend that. Your forks are filled almost all the way to the top with oil. I say "almost" because there is a slight air pocket at the top that is intentionally left to act like a spring as it is compresses by fork travel. If you raise your fork oil level and make that smaller air pocket smaller, it acts like a stiffer spring. I dont remember the #'s off of the top of my head, but with the correct weight oil, the right oil lever height, and the right settings, one of my buddies races on BONE stock forks in the WERA expert class and regularly finishes top 5.

Ok, I am 135 lbs, so what fork oil weight would you reccomend? For the fork seals, don't you need like aa special tool to push the seal out or something? Fooling around with the front forks is completely new to me, so i am jsut trying to figure it out.

Older forks don't need to remove the seal. Much easier than the newer cartridge forks

i have the seal driver from motion pro, as well as the seal bullit.

getting them out is easy, its driving them back in that u have to be gentle. u dont want to damage the seal when putting it back in.

Your weight is perfect for the soft honda forks. I slid one tube out at a time,remove the spring,spacer and washers. Turn tube upside down, let it drain, pump it 10 times or so, let it drain more. Turn tube rightside up and the slider all the way down, get some 10 weight fork oil and the right quanity, pour half of it in, pump the slider a few times slowly, pour in remaining oil, re-install washers,spacer and spring. It took me about 2 hours from start to finish for both tubes.

Slide each tube outta the triple one at a time? Is that what you mean? And when you fill the tubes up, do you want to fill them up when they are perfectly vertical? Or fill them when they are on the bike

I jsut read that other thread..So on the 03-04, all you need to do is take the cap off and pour out the oil and you dont have to worry about that spring compressor thing?

Someone recommended 10wt and someone else recommended 7.5.....What comes stock with the bike and what do most people use?

The 03-04 is still a cartridge fork. The best way to change the fluid is by setting an air gap. The only way to do that is to remove the cap and springs.

Depending on the type of riding you do, setting the fluid by volume is fine. To do that is even simpler. You do not remove the cap, you simply pour out the old, cycle the damping rod several times until the fluid is out and then fill to the correct volume

Ok last few questions. How do you pour out the oil without taking off the cap?? And what is the correct volume of fluid?
