Friend crashed in the Canyons yesterday...

I'll start by saying everyone is alright, luckily - asside from the guy's bike.

We decided to go for a ride through the canyons yesterday as it was quite nice out. 3 of us are on CBRs, 2 600RRs and a 1000RR, but out 4th friend is a bit too short for a CBR and had to get a Ninja 500 which is an alright bike but was certainly not made for the typical canyon riding we do.

Basically we were up in the canyon and had just started on our way down the other side and in the first hard turn, the guy in front of my with the ninja scraped peg a little bit and freaked out and fell over and started sliding. He jumped off as he got to the edge of the road and was just scratched up from sliding on the ground (luckily not badly because he was wearing gear) but his bike was not so fortunate. The bike continued to slide into a tree right off the edge of the road, which I suppose is better than if he had slid early and it could have ended up falling off the small cliff that was right there as well.

Luckily I was a safe distance behind and did not have a problem in the turn, but it did suck seeing a fellow rider down as I stopped after the turn to help him. We were also pretty lucky a few people came by at the time and one of which took him home since the bike was not rideable and I had a passenger at the time. Sucks his bike pretty much got ruined and it was only a few months old, but we were lucky that no one was hurt.

Sucks , glad he is ok. Good thing you didnt plow into the back of him , could have been alot worse
That Ninja should be great in the canyons. OK, so he scraped a peg, but he still passed ya. Ok, so the RR would have given it a hard time, but the 1000 should have been out done by the three of ya. I thought those 500's kicked ass, what tyres did he have on it, i see allot about with touring tyres.
glad to hear hes ok .....
Glad to hear he was wearing his gear and is ok.
About a year ago I was on a group ride with a guy who did something similar. He panicked on a turn and decided to jump off the bike before it went down a steep canyon. He pretty much only slid on his arse but the bike went tumbling down.

It went down so far that he had to leave it overnight and ride b*tch on the way back home. He picked it up in his dad's truck the next day, but it was a total loss...no insurance either.
thats not a bike... you said his bike is messed up.
Glad hes ok, but it sounds like he out grew that 500 a while ago, if hes up front scraping pegs.

It does have some sort of touring tires, not street at all. And it wasnt any sort of race or competition, nor was he in front - just a casual ride with 4 of us friends through the canyons. I personally didnt want to be up front holding 2 of the guys back that didnt have passengers with them at the time.

lol, id agree to that first part - not the second though, the 500 is good for him, not just because he's short, i really dont think he could handle even a 600, he was just trying to keep up with the 1000 and 600 ahead, he was 1 of 2 without a passenger.
"...he was just trying to keep up with the 1000 and 600 ahead..."

This is what caused the accident. Happens all the time.
Tough break glad he is ok
at least he is ok

sorry to hear that dude, start a new thread & take some pics, show your battle scars with pride (or shame).
i just started riding, hope WHEN (*NOT* if) i go down is not too bad...i wear my gear except for pants.. i just wear jeans...
glad to hear he is ok. "Ninja 500 which is an alright bike but was certainly not made for the typical canyon riding we do", unless you are an excellent rider, a good rider on a 500 can keep up with you.

Jeans will last for about a 10 foot slide. Textile about 30 feet. Leather 60+.

It's your ass. I wear thick leather.
trust me, jeans wont even make it 10ft in a slide.
There are some nice affordable textile pants out, definately give em a look.
