Yet another one of these threads...

Got the old gal back on the road the other day, had been about 3 months sitting.

Battery was old when I got the bike 2 years ago so I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did; replaced it. Starter. Vroom.

Yay.

Park it. Go back an hour later and my gauges are dead. No needle sweep, no lights, no speedo, nothing. But clock is still keeping time.

Pull fuses and it's blown. I replace it. Gauges come to life, everything works.

Yay.

Park it. Go back an hour later. Once again. Gauges are dead.

Ride bike to my shop.

Pull the map light and tail plate lights, replace fuse. Gauges come to life.

Yay.

Park it. Go back an hour later. Gauges are BLOW A-FREAKING-GAIN!

Never had this problem before and I'm starting to get frustrated.

Anyone else ever experience this? I've checked my tail light (OEM) and there's no ground faults...

Why would it ONLY be happening when the bike is off? Should I add decoupling capacitors if it's a surge when the bike gets shut off? Should I bypass the OE harness completely for the tail/map/gauge and add a fuse block? Should I try to sing it a soft rock tune and appease whatever motorcycling god I have upset?

Also...

Looking through the manual...

It says main fuse and sub-fuse?

I've been pulling the fuse located in the main block under the left fairing. Is there a second fuse that I should be pulling/looking at?

Main 30A fuse is good.

Bike starts and runs perfect. No other problems than gauges not working.

Mine did that once. Was a loose relay under the left fairing. But after I replaced the fuse it never blew it a second time. Even before I found the relay.
Best of luck finding the cause. And when you do make sure you post what it was so people that may have the issue in the future can see what you did.

I've got the wiring diagram all mapped out and I'm not seeing anywhere the fuse that's blowing might cross with any relay.

Right now I'm only seeing that the fuse that's blowing is: running tail light, plate marker, gauges, neutral/oil/temp/speedometer.

It does route through the turn switch, but it truncates at the running lights in front (they have been deleted due to flush mounts anyways).

I'll try pulling the rear cowl off, maybe it's the running tail light that's been melted and is sporadically shorting???... :ponder:

I don't remember now. I've had a few different electrical problems I've had to sort out. Such a pita. Mostly time consuming.

Taking the tail off is a good idea. You want to be able to see as much as possible. Check all connecters too. I had one of the wires melt part of the connector between the harness and sub harness. Check for any exposed wire too. Best of luck sir. :thumbup:

Well...

Irritatingly enough...

It's fixed.

How? AIN'T NO CLUE!

Took the entire front fairing off, checked for faults in the running lights, none.

Took the rear cowl off and checked the whole harness, no faults.

Checked the relays (next to fuse and in-dash) and all were good.

Replaced the fuse, put everything back together and it's solved.

I'm knackered but happy :cruising: or maybe :banghead:
