So my 03 with roughly 20k miles is coughing up some smoke when I engine break, but only when I engine break.
Now I have talked to a dealership mechanic and he said it might be running lean and that a PC3 with a certified dynotune might fix the problem.
So what I did is replace the plugs, got a street BMC filter, changed the oil, and I did my valves at 16k. And it still does it.
OH, and the smoke is like an off white blue-ish tint that probably disappears after 2-3 feet from the can.

So I wanted to see if there is something I can check myself to see if its a major problem or if something small might fix it too.

I think I covered everything that might be able to let you guys identify the problem, if not just ask for more info. Thanks!!

You're burning oil. a PC will not fix that problem. When you let off the throttle... there is more of a vacuum in the cylinder and it will pull in a little oil but still burn it. You might just need new rings and a touch up hone job... or you need to be bored out and new pistons and everything.

Sorry for the bad news. You can fix your motor but it will cost $300 for the required new gaskets and new bolts just to put it together + the cost of repair parts.

My opinion... I'd just get another motor off ebay or somewhere... and I'd run the one you have till it's shot. You'll lose a little gas mileage and HP but unless you race it... I'm sure it will still be fast enough.

Leaking piston rings won't cause a motor to blow up. I wouldn't take a bike that smokes to the track though. ( just out of respect to all of those people I pass) LOL. If you ride it to work and fool around on the weekends... Like MX said... keep up with the oil and run her till she dies.

Also could be leaking valve seals... slightly less expensive to replace but still won't make a motor blow up.

i agree- just stay on top of the oil level and ride it... it's fine.
