Hi guys!

I'm attending two trackdays on January (16 and 31), and I have to tape the lights...

Obviously I'll be using blue painters tape, as it seems to come off easier than regular masking tape. But I'm worried about two things:

a) If the headlights are on, they will overheat the tape and the adhesive may stick into the lenses. How can I turn the headlights off? Just pulling out the fuse? (I've read that on some bikes the dashboard feeds from the same power line, so you can actually screw it if you remove the fuse).

b) How long can I leave the tape over the lenses? I would rather just tape them once instead of taping them for each trackday.

I also have to remove the mirrors. Is there some sort of block off plate to put in place of the mirror?

tape up the lights, then take the bulbs out. very simple.

regarding the block of plates you could make your own, just trace round the base on the mirror on anything solid really, plastic, mdf, ali etc etc then cut it out.

there is one more thing you should tape up, The speedo part of your clocks, you don't need to look at it so just get rid of the temptation to look down at it, and then look up to see you have missed your braking point

Definitely do NOT take out the headlight fuse, just unplug the headlight.....at the light itself. As far as blockoff plates go, if you aren't too mechanically inclined, you can buy blockoff plates on ebay pretty cheap. I think I got mine for around $12 or $13. The name brand blockoffs are waaaaay overpriced.

It won't melt, you can just leave them on. You can use block off plates, but you can also just put the bolts back in. It works fine.

This is the best advice to do aswell. A friend of mine told me to do the same thing.
For the mirrors I just take them off and use some wire ties to hold the front cowl on for more security.

You can just tape ove rthe lights and leave it. No need to pull a fuse, no need to remove it. I've done it a ton of times on my '07.

For teh mirrors, I could never get the big bolt in the middle out, so I remove the whole assembly by taking out the two little bolts on the side. No need to wire anythign. The fairing will stay in place.

Go to Cyclegear and buy the square sheets of vinyl they have. They sell it in the dirt-bike section. Cut up the pieces for all your lights and presto chango, you have permanent light decals that you can re-use over and over again for the track as long as you keep the sticky part clean when you peel them off the bike after a track event. No annoyingly ugly painters tape needed :)

You can't take the headlight fuse out of the '07 since the bike won't fire without it. What I do is:

-tape all lights with black electrical tape. It doesn't leave goo behind and the black looks better than bright blue (unless you have a blue bike :).
-unplug the headlights. Its really easy, just unscrew the cap a half turn exposing the wires, then unplug it, tape the wire, screw the cap back on. I tape up the end of the plug with electrical tape. This is probably unnecessary, but it only takes 20 seconds.
-unplug the rear lighting harnesses. You might have to take off the rear bodywork to access the plugs.
-unscrew the center bolt in the mirror. It's stiff, but will release. Then your mirror plate acts as a block-off plate.

why would you do that instead of just unplugging the lights/?

^he he, I used duct tape my first trackday.

What is so wrong with pulling the headlight fuse? is there something different about 07's? my bike runs fine with it out.

I beleive you can pull the headlight fuse on the 03-06 with no problems, but the 07-10 's need the headlight fuse to start the engine. Its the way Honda wired them. There was a thread somewhere about a work-around where you hold down the starter button while turning the key on, but it never worked for me. Its not a big deal though, pulling the wires from the lights is easy enough.

I do this before I tape up the lights. get some liquid car wax. polish up the headlights. then put the blue painters tape on. Trim as necessary or to your liking. and unplug the harness from the bulb. Do your trackday. Afterwards, the painters tape comes off very easy without residue on your headlights.

I taped up my lights last season...no problems.
just tape em up good...should show no light.
I tape first with masking..then top layer with black duct tape.
basically no light should show...

Really the reason you do this these days....is:
1) No distraction from riding. (front or rear)
2) specially rear ...since brake light
3) if headlight plastic breaks..it will be all over the track..
