Helmet noise?

1357 Views 22 Replies 18 Participants Last post by  hungrycanuck
Sounds like a weird question, but how noisy should it be inside your helmet. I have friends that listen to music (which I don't plan on doing again), and I have tired before but couldn't even hear with earbuds in because it is so loud inside my helmet due to the air.

Is my helmet not tight enough or is this typical? Just curious!

Thanks

Some helmets are much noisier than others.
My HJC is pretty noisy inside. Wear earplugs. I can't stand riding without them anymore.
My Shark RSR2 is really quiet even without ear plug.
It would help if you let us know what kind of helmet you rock....then we can give you some worth while feed back...

Lukas, you're lucky to rock that RSR2. I just had to send the black/ gold kinetic back because I couldn't get it to fit properly.

OP, noisy helmet= good ventilation. Usually. What lid do you have?
wear earplugs, problem solved.

If i plan to go more than 35 mph I don't leave home without earplugs. And I always have a few in my jacket pocket.
Earplugs!!!!!!!
my scorpion isnt the quiestest, my bell is a little quieter
Scorpion sux! Nice sig quote though.

:fyou: whore I like it and it does the job its intended to do
I found that the RF-1100 is pretty quiet as long as all the vents are closed, but once you pop the windshield a little forward or have the vents open, it's nothing but whistling in your ears!!
helmets can routinely reach over 80dB from wind noise. If exposed for long periods of time, you can go deaf from such exposure. Wear earplugs to prevent this.

Also, Shark makes really quite helmets.

Ventilation in the RSR2 is great (not the best), and the noise level is really low because the pad around the ear is like ear cup to isolate the noise around helmet. It's kinda snug( a little bit tight) around the ear tho.
I have a Joe Rocket 101 Carbon helmet. It is nicely ventilated but very loud. I just picked up a couple different brands of earplugs today and will try them out. Riding home for about 4 hours today -- gotta be horrible on the ears without plugs.

Anybody have a custom seat for the long rides? I've done 8 hours before, and my ass was SO numb!
Interesting. I wear a shoei rf-1100 also, and at highway speeds the wind noise is painfully loud. I always wear earplugs, otherwise I feel like I'm damaging my hearing.
I have 2 helmets, an HJC CL-SP and a Shoei TZR. The TZR quite quiet, even on the freeway. The HJC is a little louder, but still manageable. If the noise is super irritating and you dont want to have to deal with earplugs, try a windjammer.

I have a friend who has one, says it works magic for making a helmet quieter. you can see this when you ride, cover the space in front of your chin with your glove. Watch (listen to?) the decibels drop.
