I have installed the Garmin Zumo 550 on my motorcycle and have routed the power cable around the tank all the way to the battery and fuse box. I am trying to figure out what I should plug the cables into to have power to the zumo dock. Anyone's input who has experience installing a zumo or another GPS unit would be greatly appreciated.

I suggest using the license plate light connector
for your source of power

I'll have to look at the electrical wiring diagram to the fuse box but that's a good idea. There are two cables though. One that connects to the DC power and one that connects to ground. Now, not meaning to ask a noob question, but I attached ground to the frame (just confirm that I did the right thing) and I wanted to connect the DC wire to the ignition switch.

Let me know if anyone has any additional occasions.

Attaching the ground to the frame is ok
connecting the positive to the ignition switch
is a risk because if for some reason there is a
short the ignition switch might get damaged
That is why i suggested the license plate light
plug

If you want to do this right then run a relay off your positive battery post and have it triggered by the license plate light (good call moe). I say this because i do not know how much power the unit draws and this way you dont have to worry about blowing the light fuse. You are also good to mount the ground to the frame. make sure the area is clean before hand and put some battery gel (anti corrosive) after install. you can find a packet for a buck at pep boys. Good luck!

Well, I hooked up the DC cable to the ignition cable (ya, I did that before I asked for help) and the GPS hub does not get a constant stream of power. I am assuming this is because the ignition cable only transfers power when the ignition switch is being pressed. Well, the DC cable for the hub actually has a fuse in itself and I am wondering if it would be possible to hook this up directly to the battery rather than playing around with the other cables (I can see a lot of potential problems with this scenario, like the hub constantly draining the battery to charge the GPS unit). I like the idea of hooking up the DC to the license plate light, but I can't seem to find it on the wired diagram. The only wire that I was able to find on the diagram is the Brake/Tail/License light but I can't figure out which one is which. Three cables come out of that spot and one is Green, Green/Yellow, and White/Black. Any additional help would be appreciated. In the mean time, I will try to contact Garmin technical support to see if they can help too.

Yah, I'm probably putting too much work into this, but I just want to make sure I do it right.
