I was out riding my CBR today and when I bought it, it had HID's installed and I am not sure of the brand. The have been working fine the last few times I've ridden the bike. I noticed eventually in the reflection of the car in front of me at a traffic light that my main running light was out (low beam). I flipped the High beam switch and the high beam came on. I turned the bike off completely and restarted it and the main running light (low beam) came back on for the rest of the ride and was fine. Is this a common problem that can happen or is there a possible loose wire/ connection somewhere?

You may have a problem with the ballast or globe - especially if they are old as they do wear out. After a number of attempts to ignite the lamp it will stop trying and your light won't come on.

I'll check the ballast and all wiring when I get a chance. The bike was my buddies before it was mine and he installed the whole kit brand new last spring. How long to the globes typically last?

Should be longer than that, but if you have been regularly hot re-striking them you may have been lucky to get as long as you did...

Is there a relay installed or switch to prevent the light from turning on until AFTER the bike is started? If the light is on when you try and start it, it will turn off to start the bike and then come back on. That will cause your ballast to go bad quickly. If you don't have one of these installed I would get one and replace your ballasts.

You can get timer relays but they only keep them off for a predetermined time, they don't care if the bike is running or not.

If you want something to keep them off until the bike is running have a look in my sig...

No one thinks possible bad ground...?

If not a ground issue, then I would have to agree
with Nico may be an issue with the Ballast or bulbs...

Could be, but I would have expected the light to stay off when cycled if that was the case.

That's what I meant. I didn't put it that way because I figure if you are going to start the bike you aren't going to sit there for a while with the ignition on and not start it. But thanks for clarifying for anyone who didn't know.

It snowed a couple weeks ago but most of the snow has melted but there were a few wet spots here and there I HAD to go through. (tried to avoid any type of puddle) Think some water might have created a small short real quick? By the way, thanks to everyone for their input. Definitely considering putting the headlight controller in or getting a relay to keep the lights off until the bike started.

I have this same exact issue actually. Anyways, I've been doing some work on my front end, and while reconnecting it to the bike to test some newly installed electrical work, I noticed some more symptoms related to the issue. Turn the key off and back on, the running light (low) HID will turn back on. High beam works fine. If I try and start it with a less than full battery, it will go out and wont come back on. Makes me wonder if it has something more to do with the ballast not getting enough constant voltage/wattage/amperage/whatever(im not sure what) during my drive. As I always drive with my high beams on during the day I'm not too worried about it just yet, and it hasn't happened at night yet when all I'm running is my low beams.

Huh? Thats odd. Glad to know I'm not the only around with the problem. My buddy is gonna help me take a look at it and check all the wiring and connections as he is the one who installed it. That's interesting though. Maybe the battery/ bike doesn't produced enough power at some point to power the ballast therefore the light goes out and doesn't come back on.

I also hit a couple bumps and pot holes. I wonder if a hard enough bump disrupted power temporarily and therefor the bulb went out and did not come back on? So many possibilities.....

Somefimes they just wont light up. I had hids on my first mustang and every now and then one of themwouldnt light up.. Shutting them off and turning them on again fixed the problem. If they work now it could be the same issue

Ever find the cause behind this? I'm having the same issue now except the low beam won't turn on at all. High beam works fine just no low. I've even gone back to stock bulb set up and still no go.
