Ive been riding for a good while now, and I bomb through the twisties pretty hard.. at least as hard as you can without dropping a knee and all..

I figured riding track is a good LEGAL way to hone my skills and develop a better riding posture etc. Not to mention rid myself of bad habits I picked up on my own.

What are you suggestions for wanting to ride track and race? Should save up an ass-ton of money and take the race schools or just start the beginner track days?

What all should I need? To my understanding I need good track tires, race fairings (or tape up lights) and remove mirrors, drain coolant and replace with water.. and Ill need a 1 piece suit.. any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.

most started with beginner trackdays then some progressed to become full time or part time racers. save your money for spare tires & track time until you have built up enough skill to go in a racing school.

the closest track to me is Indie in wilcox, az. I heard its alright but I really want to hit up Arroyo Seco in NM.. anybody have experience with either tracks?

I'm in the same situation. Hallette in Tulsa is the closest track. Really want to get into it as a hobby. I dont have the backing of a sponcer or anything. Just a place to hone skills and take care of the speed bug.

my ultimate goal is to get really good, attend a race school or two (they arent cheap!) and try to get into the AMA's.. I am in the USAF and want to get them in on the sponsoring.. we have football, monster trucks, indy cars, nascar.. why not AMA or even WSBK haha

hey I dont let anything get in my way of goals.. its a huge "dream" but I am really dedicated to do this.

you go once u are done, u now have a new hobby, but it will be expensive, the biggest thing is tires, they get real expensive, cost to go 150.00 each time. but i will tell you it is like a pure adrenaline rush, all day long....

Yeah.. thats costly. Bout how much it is here in Oklahoma. Thats why i started becoming a strip junky. $20 for t-n-t. Can't beat that.. all the passes you want for $20. I do want to get into the track though. Whats a good place to buy all the racing leathers and such?

get a tracksuit from disco for 279, i think it is the teknic closeout, its 600.00 usually, its the suit i bought and i love it.

I really need to find a jacket also... for everday. I have been shopping for a long time ... and i am to big for the yoshi's and locally they dont have anyother leather jackets. All mesh.. and dont want those. I'm only around 165 lbs .. but should be around 180 lbs. LOL.. Jillian Micheals... from the biggest looser. I lost like 40 lbs in little over a month. So.. i'm light, but big chested. That sounds bad... Any help would be appreciated.

size 38-40 should do you fine, im 185-190lb athletic build, and i wear a 42 and it fits perfect, tracksuit, 44 jacket, yeah my wife has got me watching the new series that jillian michaels has, losing it. ughhh...rather be riding....

my advise is start small, no need to go all out your first few track days, pick up a second hand suit, lots of people on here sell lightly used suites that only have a few track days wear.

taping up head lights will work, but expensive if you wreak you street plastics and lights. perhaps see if can pick up some used race fairings.

street tires (good ones atleast, michelin 2cts, pirelli corsa IIIs ect.) will be plenty sticky enough for a novice (and remember you are a novice, forget that and it will cost you) street tires will last you into the front of the intermediate pack, they also last longer and since you will most likely still ride street in between track days, you won't have to buy 2 different sets of tires.

I think doing a few track days is a good idea before going to an expensive race school. The advice that control riders and local fast guys have to give is pretty good. your first few times on the track you will have a lot to learn, and you will need to learn a lot of that stuff before you can learn (and understand) more advanced concepts. going to a race school your first time out you will be spending a lot money to just learn the basics that you could have learned at a track day.

keep in mind my advice is coming from someone who is still a noob who has not been to a legit race school.

Thx for the advice on the gear and also for the track. I'm all about getting used parts and gear. Just to get started.

My advice: Get a one-piece race suit (There are low cost last-years model Teknic suits out there for cheap or buy used). Get a set of good tires. Attend a track day and start in the "C" or novice group. Swallow your pride and be open to advice. Take it easy. Don't worry about getting your knee down immediately. Smoother is better. Then... I recommend the Keith Code California Superbike School. I know it's expensive, but IMO Keith is the MAN and his school is great. Then pay the extra 60 to 100 bucks on your next track day, go through a new racer's school and get your racer's license. Most track day organizations offer discounts for track days for racers. After you complete your novice races, you can then fill out applications for sponsers and contingencies (getting paid to win). I'm out at Willow Springs Int'l Raceway (Rosamond, CA) every month racing. Have fun!!!

yeah, don't throw two much money into you're first track day. I did one, and plan to do more. I just picked up a used suite from a friend, taped up my lights, took of mirrors and turn signals and did fine. And yeah, street tires should be fine, I rode a set of dunlop Q2s, which had plenty of grip, I was even able to get my knee down in a few turns near the end of the day, which I was happy with considering it was my first track day. Also I would recommend NESPA, they put on a good day, and the control riders are very good, and can help a lot, listen to them and you learn a lot.

INDE is an awesome track! It is a little advanced but IMO it is the most technical track out west (at least that I have ridden).

Good advice all around. First step is just getting out there. Have an open mind and welcome criticism from everyone (although not all of it will be helpful). Make sure your machine is safe and put on a set of tires you trust.

LOL! Thats why i haven't gotten into taking my Cobalt SS/TC to the track! lol.. its what it was made for specially with the mods that are done. Even runs in the high 12's @ the strip! I do however, have more of calling with my bike. I'm totally hooked. I dont have twisties around me. I do, however, have alot of flat dull land that craves speed. lol... There are some HP and Sherrif about, but for the most part.. They are fairly un busy streets out in the country. Other than the occassional farmer and harvest.. pretty dead. So.. fun times to open her up WOT and hold on. I am craving the need to further my talents and abilities. The need to harness and improve all the while keeping in a "possitive" environment is what i really want. If i had land and a private track... oh heck yes. haha... would have a grown ups playground, but a correct one.

We run in NH and NJ, but my recommendation is to find a trackday that fits your style and goals... and then check them out.

Once you've experienced the track environment... you'll be able to make a lot of other decisions easier (like type of gear, etc)
