why is that ? defective tires ? riding style?

wow, one would lead to think that the difference in tires from the same manufacturer had to do with 2 things... 1 compound, I think edwards was on a med rear and hayden was on a hard. and 2 bike setup. Certain setups are a lot harder on tires than others, it just depends how the bike is configured... same things happen in F1 (anyone see hockenheim this weekend)

Yeah Renault had their tires out on display, pretty much saying it was the tires and not the car.

yeah, but not all the michelin guys (for gp) were having trouble... so that would lead to bike setup and the riders tire management. While the michelin tire may not have been what everyone was hoping for, it was certainly up to the task of the race.

As for F1, bridgestone has made huge leaps as far as tires, and michelin has been caught sleeping. Renault is bitching about the tires but it's not entirely the tires. lots of other guys weren't having problems with them.

It's weird how they compare in different types of racing.

Bridgestone is kicking butt in F1 and Michelin is holding it down in MotoGP.

There are a number of factors that contribute to tire wear:

1. Obviously, the first is tire compound: soft, medium, hard, dual compound?
2. Chassis setup contributes to how much stress is placed on the tire, e.g., Hondas have been good all year on Michelins whereas the Camel Yamahas have been variable from race to race.
3. Racing/Riding Style: The best illustration that comes to mind was in the movie "Days of Thunder" when Cole Trickle is first learning how to race Nascar; there was "his" way to race, then there was the Crew Manager's way to race. You can shred tires by pushing too hard, or race clean and save tires.
4. Variability in Tire Manufacturing
5. Environmental Factors, i.e., track temps
