Is it more of a stereotype that all R1 riders are squids??

I ask because yesterday my 5 yr old and I were talking about me getting a bike (He loves them and sounds like he's more amped then me to get one). Anyway as we are talking 2 R1's are next to us in traffic.

Of course my son doesn't know the difference (He just knows the color I want) so he says: "Look Daddy there's your bike". I smile and tell him That its a motorcycle but its a little bigger then daddy wants to ride right now.

Anyway right after that conversation those 2 guys decide to wheelie (which was kinda kewl since they were right beside my door) but then they they start to wheelie thru traffic. I could just see the look of disgust on all the other commuters faces when I drove past them.

Just I'm shaking my head in disbelief @ their ignorance for their own and everyone else's safety my 5 yr old pipes up and asks: "Daddy will you be doing that when you get your bike". I promptly told him no and he replied with "Good becuase that's looks scary.

I can't believe these guys not only popped it up in traffic but went between cars popping it up.

These were both R1's. over the past weekend I witnessed the same stupidity. Befire I've seen you guys refer to R1 and R6 owners as squids but i always thought since this was a Honda board that was a natural thing. Now I'm starting to wonder if there is really any truth to these stereo types.

What makes an R1 owner want to be so irresponsible on the street??

Yes, yes they absolutely are.

No I'm kidding sort of. I think you will find that sort of occurence to happen more often on a liter bike especially at this time of year. Although there are a lot of riders out there that are great at handling a liter bike, there are just as many who only buy them to show off. If someone wants a bike just to show off, why would anything less than 1000cc's be good enough.

In most situations I don't use the word squid or judge other people's riding style, I just say to each is own, but in your situation I think it is sad when people take those risks in traffic because then it's not a self risk, you are taking risk for those around you as well.
Apex i ITR,

Dude, I’ve been watching the Sex and the City DVD collection at night with my wife for about 2 weeks now. Every day Carrie asks an intriguing question. Last night was: Are all men freaks?

Your question was classic: What makes an R1 owner want to be so irresponsible on the street??

A compelling question I might add.

I would say it's the power. The need to demonstrate the power they command makes them do things like burn outs, wheelies, and rolling burnouts. I have to admit, power is nice. But so is safety.

R1’s should be sold only to responsible riders, just the same as the elderly should be given physical exams to determine if they belong on the road.
Any bike that makes more than enough power for the average rider will get this kind of rep.

i'd have to say the majority of sportbike riders are squids that i want to bitch slap. i see more retards doing dumb **** on sport bikes than i even care to start talking about.

granted i am not "holier than thou", i do get on it every now and then, but the stuff i see on a daily basis makes me want to be a cop so i can rip them off their bikes and put them face first in the dirt.

point of story is that squids are everywhere and ride all makes and models of bikes. the larger cc bikes have sort of a squid equilibrium... as soon as some die more replace them. it's a never ending cycle of squidliness.
worry about yourself, let them find out the hard way!
I wasn't neccesarily worried about myself but it did make me wonder why people want to take those risks.

The more i read (and every so often get an opportunity to ride) the more I feel drawn in to this world. Honestly I have a friend who is all about top speed and he's trying to get me to getone right off the bat because in his words...."I'll never be able to keep up with a 600".

I always tell him I don't care about keeping up. I care about the ride. Nice sunny day (Be it a Saturday, Sunday or a day taken off from work because its so nice outside) riding along just being for lack of a better word "Free".

I'm so capivated by everything to do with a bike honestly I wouldn't want to do anything stupid and risk losing it, my license, someone's safety, my life, my children having a father, a wife having a husband, a mother having a son, a sister having a brother......there's so many other things that can kill you on a bike....>WHY up the stakes by displaying how fast your bike is to cagers who for the most part think a bike is a death certificate waiting to happen.

I guess some people forget about all those things when they get on bikes.

Yes... you are stereotyping! ALL R1 riders are not squids. I happen to be very close friends with guys who have r1's and they are two of the most responsible riders I know. It is not the bike... it is the rider... there is no disputing that!!!!
Squids come in all shapes and sizes and ride all kinds of bikes.

That said....

The majority of the squids that I observe are riding either Suzuki GSXRs (Hi Tony! ) or Yamaha R6/R1s.

I don't see a lot of squids riding Hondas or Kawasakis.

I never had this stereo type. I've seen it displayed here often so I was asking if anyone knew why it seemed that way.
I think that the way a bike is marketed is the main reason that it attracts, more often than not, riders whom are more willing to do stunts.

Sorry... I meant "it is a stereotype".
penis envy, most literbikes owners have the power because they think that 500's and 600's don't have enough power to kill themselves on. au contraire, i wadded up an ex250 without any problem.
Squidliness knows no bounds or brands, I'm afraid to say. I see squids on every bike imagineable -- GSXRs, R1s, R6s, ZXs, and yes, even our beloved CBRs.

The CBR squids just happen to have better taste... :lol2:
The fact is, ignorance is not biased towards race, sex, creed, or what bike you ride.

Stupid is just stupid regardless who is being stupid.

+1
I agree with mostly everyone here and imho, most riders on liter bikes are of the more squidly variety. I find that they just aren't aware of the situation and think bigger=better when it comes to sportbikes. With some help, we can teach these poor souls the truth.
Most squids ride to be seen...and as much as i hate to admit it being a honda guy....the yamahas are better looking IMO (with the exception of the 600RR).
The gixxers of the past and even now have flashier colors so of course the squids will be all over that.

I had this 18ish yr old kid come up to me and ask me if my bike was a honda...then he tells me that hes looking to get a busa real soon....oh man...poor kid. He obviously doesnt know much about bikes if he cant even tell that mine is a honda and is looking at a busa?!

thats just about the dumbest thing i've heard in a while.
