the arrow on the side ... is it on top or bottom? the arrow indicates which way the tire should be rotating while traveling properly

roll the bike forward and watch the arrow. if the arrow is going the same way you're rolling [forward], then you're good. otherwise...

Most front tires are like that.

As they said the arrow should be pointing forward if it's at the top, ALSO there are arrows on the discs and wheel. If all are in the same direction you are good.

The arrow indicates the direction of travel that the tire was designed for. Same as for some car tires. Mounting the tire on wrong will decrease performance and cause unnecessary wear on the tire.

If the arrow on the side is point to the direction where the tire should be rotating then you are good.

I had heard at one point a while back that it had to do with grip braking vs. grip accelerating. Never really was curious enough to dig any more into it, but I guess it sorta makes sense....
