Jump Starting / Jumping off from car

4462 Views 16 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  WherzRoony
I'm a idiot and I left my bike in the on position and I drained my battery.

Questions:

1. Can I just roll down the hill and jump start it?

2. Can I jump it off with my car?

Help!

1) Yes, but if it stalls, suck to be you pushing it back up hill.
2) Yes, but be careful. I have jump started my bike twice off my Camaro with no problems. They are both 12V.

Side note, you have a very little altenator in your bike. It will not charge the battery back up to full. Buy a battery tendor or trickle charger and get it back up to full juice.
You could bump start it if there were enough left in the batt to prime the fuel pump and power the ign. If not jump it with a car. When you hook it up, leave the car off. Connect it and then start the car and let it run a few mins to charge the bike. Then start the bike and get that batt tender LOL!
Did that with the Duc before. It ran like crap for a couple months after that. Could that have been the battery or maybe something with the FI?
I've heard not to use a car to jump a bike unless it's off so that you're just using the car battery for juice other wise it could screw up something in the electrical system. I don't know what or why but that's what I've been told by a several people. Now with that being said I've jumped my old bike with my truck running and no problems.

I would try jumping it and taking it for like a 30 minute ride and then pick up a charger for $20.

DONT start the car when you jump it. Just turn the key so that the car is on but not the battery. It will send enough voltage from the car battery to the bike.
I've got a battery pack that has a air compresser and light and other stuff on it. I could use it to jump my bike if I need it. NEVER jump a bike from a running car! It'll cause damage to your bike. But getting that little battery kit was the best thing I could ever do. I can pump up my tires at home. Take it with me in the car. Very easy. I also have a battery tender but you can't start the bike off it. It'll charge it up after a few hours but if your dead and need a jump you just can't plug it in and start your bike up.

If you dont want the car running why would you want the key on???? You can start it ONLY after is has been connected. If you do it prior you can spike the system. You CAN safely charge the bike with the car ONLY after it is connected. The alternator for the car will only put out enough to charge.

CBRBob,
Because if the key is on in the car, the battery is working (radio, lights, etc.). Gives enough energy to charge the bike battery. This is what my local dealer told me, and when my bike battery was dead, this is the method I used, and it worked perfectly.

And I also suggest a bettery tender jr. Picked one of those up and they work nicely.
If you hook directly to the car battery then there is no need for the key to be on.

The key is what gives the car juice through a relay. The battery will have power with or with out the key. If your car battery is charged the altenator should only be producing about 13v. This is not horribly high voltage. A battery tender is the way to go. I would not make a habit of letting a bike battery get low too many times.
i did the same thing leaving my lights on cause i wanted the fan to cool off the engine ... i didn't have a battery tender so i went to the dealer and got it fully charged for free :bounce:

Time to find a new dealer!!! BAHAHAHA  You dont need they key to power a battery, the battery is what supplies the power.
The voltage from the car battery is not the damaging component guys, it's the amperage (or rate/speed of "juice" flowing through the system). A typical motorcycle electrical system only rates at about 200A max (max. being cranking amps from a battery). Auto systems are rated between 500-1000 max! The amperage is what can fry a regulator rectifier....a major component of your charging system (controls how much charge the electrical system generates from the stator---or the bikes "altenator).

You can use a car battery but make sure that you leave the car off so that the car's alternator does not supply anymore juice (amps) to the equation. Jump starting from the car battery alone should be fine.
Yeah you'll mess up the regular rectum frier... And that don't sound good!!!

Nope, It's just that it's a Ducati :lol2:
