Ok so basically I leave for work around 8 AM, and right now its cold as tits outside "32 or so", and every time I start my bike, it stays at a high rpm, around 2.5-4k until my temp rises to about 100 degrees or so... anybody know why?

its cold bro, don't you put a blanket on her when she's sleeping,


i have an 03, and depending on the temp outside, the rpms are higher or lower,


haven't seen it climb that high, but I am in CA, so 32F, the city would be closed, hahaha,

haha sorry...

05 cbr600rr, full yoshi rs-5 exhaust system, 325 gearing, no real big mods.

I know if I feel anything is off, it makes the ride less enjoyable,

id say its just cause the cold weather, where are you at cbr89? im close to st. louis and its real cold here, havne't been on my bike for a week or so, but gonna ride to/from work after graduation next week

Right now im in Ocean city, MD so its bitterly cold haha.

since the bike is fuel injected like all rr's, you don't use a choke like a carburetor. your rpm's are higher so the bike can start up easier and get to temperature quicker in cooler temps. it sure beats using a choke. unless it stays at a higher rpm when it gets to temp, you don't have anything to worry about it's supposed to do that.

i don't exactly know why but my 08 does the same thing when it starts at cold weathers and it does come down when it get warm.

i got the same thing but thats not a problem.. mine goes up to 2500 for a few min and little backfire out the exhause and when it warm up around 100 it goes to 1500 and nice and quiet :D :D

but that backfire worries me little popps. anyone got info on that

I believe the high idle at cold temps is normal. Searching this forum shows others with the same experience. When very cold my '06 runs up around 3000rpm until the temp gauge comes alive (97 degrees) then drops slowly to 1500rpm. I don't care for such a high idle when the engine is cold, but that seems to be the way it's designed to work.

Edit: I believe that up to 2007 these engines use a "wax unit" to control the idle. As the name implies, wax is melted by the warm coolant and expands to move the fast idle lever. I think that 2007 and above use a servo controlled by the ecu.

OP, what you have going on there is exactly what you want to have happen!

The ECU monitors the coolant temp (via the ECT sensor in the throttle bodies) and adjusts the mixture to suit the conditions, in addition to this it monitors the air temp (IAT sensor) and adjusts for that as well.

You will know its time to start worrying when the bike stops doing this.

If you intend to ride reasonably often throughout the winter period it is probably also worth your while changing the oil to the weight suitable to your local conditions, and the filter at the same time (its just good practice). There is a table in both you service and user manuals that will tell you what weight you need for your (outside) temp. If you like I can post a pic of it up for you.
