California Highway Patrol and other law enforcement officers will be out in force on the July Fourth weekend, on the lookout for motorists driving drunk, speeding, or otherwise violating traffic laws.
The CHP's Maximum Enforcement Period, during which all available officers will be assigned to patrol duties, will begin at 6 p.m. and will continue until 11:59 p.m. Monday, said CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow.

"We want you to travel safely through this great state, and enjoy your weekend with friends and family," Farrow said.

Farrow said officers will also be on the lookout for motorists who fail to buckle their seatbelts.

As part of the enforcement effort, at 7 p.m., the CHP will begin a six- hour sobriety/driver's license checkpoint at Atlantic Boulevard and Hastings Street in East Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles Police Department will conduct extra patrols through the weekend in various areas, and also will conduct the following sobriety/driver's license checkpoints:

-- at 6 p.m., a six-hour checkpoint will begin at Lankershim Boulevard and Cumpston Street in North Hollywood;

-- at 8 p.m., a six-hour checkpoint will begin at Reseda Boulevard and Nordhoff Street in Northridge;

-- on Saturday at 8 p.m., a six-hour checkpoint will begin at Figueroa Street and 40th Place in southwest Los Angeles;

-- and on Monday at 4 p.m., a six-hour checkpoint will begin at Pacific Coast Highway and Temescal Canyon Road in the Pacific Palisades area.

and increased patrols are also planned throughout the county, as part of the "Avoid the 100" DUI Task Force campaign, funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
