I have been designing a racing manifold for the CBR600rr engine and was wondering if anyone knew the reason that the standard manifold joins cylinders 1-2 and 3-4 compared with the normal practice of joining 1-4 and 2-3?

My thoughts are it is to do with packaging more than performance, although i could be wrong.

Either way the headers i have designed are 4-1, just a curiosity as i am writing a report for the exhaust design.

Would be grateful if anyone could enlighten me!

Your right that its more packaging.. you can always squeeze more out of an engine but at what cost..

Do you have pics or a prototype
