yes, anytime you change exhuast,headers,velocity stacks,any real mod that can change the way the engine runs. The purpose of it in my book, is to optimize the air/fuel ratio(which obviously changes with a pipe) creating better mpg and more imortantly horsepower. You can download a map for your pipe, but thats kind of like pissing in the wind. You should do the mods you want..........then pay for a custom map(usually $250)
I have to agree with mx510's great advice. People do change the pipe without a PC or a custom map but that doesn't mean everything is fine. For example, mine (Leo Vince) had a lean spot around 8-10k rpm and was pretty rich down low.
when i had my R6 i had a two bro slip on and k/n and the map i got from the power commander folks was way to rich when i put it on the dyno. it had fouled the hell out of my plugs fast. i had already replaced the recalled coils so that wasnt the issue. had it on the dyno ,so for giggles we took the pc off and the fuel air was right on specs for the full range. i lost the printout for the run so i dont know my exact numbers. the mechanic was a former honda factory rider so he knew what he was talking about. he did say he could get a few hp more out of it if i had the day to let him adjust it. since i didnt have the time that day to sit there and let him play with it i left it off. never got a chance to put it on and play with it before it was totaled. i know you can get it perfect but with just a slip on will you really be able to tell the diff in pwr for the extra $275 for the pc and $250 for the map? or are you really risking any damage to the bike? not trying to argue, im seriously asking since ill be getting the new jardine slip on this summer after my trip.
i spent $280 on the last PC and she sits in the garage with about 2 months use on her. even if i had put it back on i dont know if i would have even known a diff. if i dont have to spend the money on the pc and finding someone with a dyno to make a make a custom map ill lbe real happy. if it will make a real diff or odds are that ill run lean enough to hurt it ill do it. if its only to tweak out an extra 1 or 2 hp i dont know if it is worth it for me. im only after the slip on for sound and looks, not a gain in hp. i wont be doing any other engine mods to this one. i dont have the cash flow i used to have before i got engaged. unfortunatly diff priorities this time. will never get rid of the bike, just cut down on the mods.
^^If the PCIII is tuned properly you will notice a difference. Normal tuners cannot calibrate the throttle position without a PCIII. Getting rid of the throttle lag is worth $200 IMO. The ability to fine tune the fuel map is just icing on the cake!
ok, unfortunatly i never got to find out with my R6 before the cager took her from me. ill wait til i can do it all then. too bad ill have to travel to get it done. even if either of the dealers here have a dyno, ill be [email protected] if i let them touch my bike. they are idiots here. ill just do it on one of my trips to atl this spring i guess. the bike is too quiet with the stock pipe and i chickened out moding the stock can. not worried about it running bad, just not comfortable with the idea of loose stuff floating around in there. thanks.
