Going on vaca soon so wanted to get the next 2 rounds up before I leave for 2 weeks. Teams still on a well deserved vaca :) Marc will look to pick up where he left off, so the second half should be a good one!!! Congrats to Team Yamaha and Bradders/Pol for taking the Win at the 8hr well done boys!!

About the circuit

The first motorsport race which took place at Indy was a motorcycle one on August 14th 1909, on the 2.5 mile oval circuit, and despite its 100-year history it was not until 2008 that MotoGP arrived at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
To celebrate the event an intense modification of the layout was undertaken, but without affecting the legendary oval. The layout of the track, which is 4.170km in length and has 16 turns, incorporates the main straight of the famous oval circuit including the Brickyard and an area between turns 1 and 2 of the oval, before meandering through the vast interior of the IMS.

Indianapolis MotoGP: Jorge Lorenzo leads Marc Marquez in practice

Jorge Lorenzo topped the first MotoGP free practice session at Indianapolis on Friday, edging out Marc Marquez.

Yamaha rider Lorenzo set the pace for the majority of the session after posting the fastest time early on and then became the first rider of the session to go under 1m34s shortly after that.

He was briefly deposed by Marquez's Honda in the closing stages before retaking top spot by 0.093 seconds with little more than a minute remaining.

Marquez, who spent the first half of practice outside of the top 10, moved towards the sharp end with a sequence of quick laps shortly after the halfway mark.

The reigning world champion was able to regularly outpace Lorenzo through the first three sectors of the lap, but on three consecutive attempts he fell back through the short final sector.

Marquez then returned to the track with around five minutes remaining, and despite still losing a tenth to Lorenzo in the final few corners he had built up enough of a gap earlier in the lap to still set the fastest time.

Before that run for Marquez, Andrea Dovizioso used a soft rear tyre on his Ducati to match Lorenzo's benchmark to three decimal places.

In the end the Italian had to settle for third as the two Spaniards improved, but he remained clear of Dani Pedrosa and championship leader Valentino Rossi, who completed the top five.

The second Ducati of Andrea Iannone was next up ahead of Cal Crutchlow, who went straight on at the first corner in the middle of the session and took to the famous Indianapolis banking before rejoining the track.

The only other incident of note came very early on when Alex de Angelis suffered a low-speed fall in the Turn 4 left-hander, before getting back on the bike and rejoining a few seconds later.

At the bottom of the order, new Aprilia signing Stefan Bradl headed MotoGP returnee Toni Elias, who ended the session nearly five seconds off the pace in 23rd.

Jorge Lorenzo edged Marc Marquez by three thousandths of a second to top the second MotoGP free practice session at Indianapolis.
The two Spaniards were tied at the top of the timesheets on a 1m32.863s when the chequered flag came out to conclude the session, with Marquez ahead in the order due to setting the time first.

However, Lorenzo was on another lap as the clock ticked to zero, and he managed to improve by 0.003s to take first position away from the reigning world champion.

Andrea Dovizioso, who went fastest three minutes from the end, was third quickest and nearly three tenths back on the lead Ducati, just ahead of his team-mate Andrea Iannone.

Cal Crutchlow completed the top five, while Pol Espargaro set the sixth quickest time before being thrown from his Tech 3 Yamaha after suffering a high-side at Turn 14 late on.

Espargaro laid in the gravel for a few moments after the crash, having rolled over the top of his handlebars before hitting the deck, but he was able to walk behind the barriers unaided a few minutes later.

At the bottom of the top 10, championship leader Valentino Rossi ended a quiet session six tenths adrift of his Yamaha team-mate Lorenzo.

Rossi only appeared in the top 10 with two minutes remaining when he climbed from 14th to ninth, and he was shuffled back a place as several drivers improved at the end.

Marc Marquez topped MotoGP's third free practice session at Indianapolis, comfortably outpacing the factory Yamaha riders he is chasing in the championship.

The reigning world champion went fastest with his first flying lap of the session early on, and with seven minutes remaining he extended his advantage over the field to four tenths of a second.

At that point, Friday pacesetter Jorge Lorenzo was second fastest on his factory Yamaha, but by the end of the session he had been pushed down to fifth by Bradley Smith, Andrea Iannone and Dani Pedrosa.

Lorenzo's session was much more convincing than his team-mate Valentino Rossi's though, as the championship leader spent much of the session outside of the top 10 cut-off to automatically pass through to Q2 later today.

Rossi used a medium rear tyre to briefly get as high as fourth, but he was shuffled back to ninth.

While Rossi eventually made the Q2 cut, Ducati's Andrea Dovizioso was a high-profile casualty as he failed to improve on his best time from Friday and dropped to 11th in the combined classification.

Both Ducatis appeared to be in trouble in the closing stages, with Iannone's first lap of his final run only good enough for 10th (and knocking Dovizioso out of a Q2 berth), but Iannone found more time on his next effort to move up to third as the flag came out.

Yamaha-contracted Tech 3 rider Pol Espargaro suffered his second crash of the weekend in the closing minutes, falling on the approach to Turn 2 shortly after setting a time good enough for eighth by the time FP3 concluded.

Marc Marquez led a Honda one-two in MotoGP qualifying to take pole position for this weekend's race at Indianapolis.

The reigning world champion set his best time of 1m31.884s on his first flying lap of the session, which at the time put him three tenths clear of factory Honda team-mate Dani Pedrosa.

While Pedrosa improved with four minutes to go in the pole-deciding Q2 segment, he could only reduce his deficit to Marquez.

Jorge Lorenzo salvaged Yamaha's day by climbing onto the front row with his final lap of qualifying, jumping from seventh to third as the chequered flag came out.

His team-mate, championship leader Valentino Rossi, continued to struggle on the Indianapolis road course, ending the session eighth having briefly been as high as third a few minutes before the end.

Lorenzo's lap knocked Cal Crutchlow off the front row on his LCR Honda, while Danilo Petrucci, who was fastest in Q1, landed fifth place after spending a lap tucked up behind the factory Ducati of Andrea Dovizioso.

That made Petrucci the leading Ducati in qualifying, with Andrea Iannone the first of the Italian manufacturer's factory bikes in seventh, and Dovizioso, who joined Petrucci in progressing from Q1 to the main session, only 10th.

Marquez, Pedrosa play down team orders

Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa have played down the chances of team orders being used to help Marquez hunt down the MotoGP championship leaders.

Marquez is a distant 65 points from Valentino Rossi and 52 from the other factory Yamaha of Jorge Lorenzo after early-season handling woes with the 2015 Honda.

But the reigning double champion has been back in control of his RCV since switching to last year's chassis at Assen, only losing out on victory at the final corner before winning next time in Germany.

The Honda momentum has continued at Indianapolis, where Marquez and Pedrosa will start first and second on the grid, with Lorenzo third and Rossi back in eighth.

Clearly the more riders Marquez can put between himself and the Yamahas, the greater his chances of pulling off an incredible championship comeback. But that doesn't automatically mean Pedrosa's form is good news for him.

“Dani is in a good performance, but that also means he can beat me!” Marquez said. “At the moment we are first and second here, also in Germany. Sure will arrive some racetracks where we will struggle a little bit more.

“But I'm happy for the team because honestly we were struggling in the first races and now I come back, Dani come back, so it looks like everything is coming better. But yeah, sometimes maybe we can put him in the middle, but sometimes also he can beat me.”

That would not be an issue if Pedrosa, who missed three races due to arm-pump surgery and is an impossible 112 points from Rossi, was instructed by Honda not to beat Marquez.

Would Marquez like to have such assistance?

“No, because we are not in the situation of this and you know already in 2013 we did our race in Valencia [the Marquez vs Lorenzo title showdown] and we are not in the situation to do this, because I think Dani also can win many races from here to the end of the season,” Marquez replied. “Just we must concentrate on our work and try to be the best of the weekend. It's logical and normal that everyone is doing their own job.”

Asked if helping Marquez reduce the championship gap or winning Sunday's race was his priority, Pedrosa replied:

“I think you know the answer! Of course I would like to win the race because it's been hard at the beginning this year, but I know I'm coming [back] little by little. Obviously being in the front is better for the team. I just have to focus on doing my race the best I can and if this means I can stay in the front, for a win or a podium, it's always positive.”

Commenting on the title fight, Pedrosa did admit his return to form could spice things up for the Yamahas.

“Jorge had a very good rhythm in four different tracks and he was able to win four races. So he recovered many points. Then Valentino won and took some points,” Pedrosa said. “It's very difficult to say how it's going to be, but at least it's very interesting to see this fight and also now we are getting closer and faster and can stay more in-between [the Yamahas]. This can make things even more interesting.”

The Repsol Honda pair also reflected on the handling problems with this year's RC213V. Marquez confirmed that despite his decision to move back to the 2014 frame, he still believes the 2015 engine - which cannot be modified due to the development freeze rules - is the root of the bad braking 'character'.

“We are using the 2014 chassis, exhaust and quite a lot of things. But the swingarm is 2015 that I think is better, but the thing is that the engine is 2015 and I think the character [braking problem] is coming from there,” he said. “We've improved but still we must work because I think the character is there, but we are coming closer and closer.”

“At the beginning of the season we had many bike problems,” added Pedrosa, who uses a different 2015 frame. “Now we know where the problems come from, so we are adjusting a little bit the bike to make it a little more easy to ride and stable. But still like Marc says the character is there so we have to handle a little bit, but obviously we are a little stronger than before and this is positive.”

Marquez has won all six of his previous MotoGP races in America and hasn't been beaten at the Indianapolis circuit since 2010, when he was competing in the 125cc class.

The #93 sat a daunting 0.6s clear of Friday leader Lorenzo during final practice, the session dedicated to race preparation, but doesn't expect such an advantage in the race.

"Maybe the six tenths aren't completely 'real' and there is actually only one or two tenths difference, but the positive thing is that we managed to turn around the gap that we had to Jorge yesterday,” he said. “There is still the warm-up tomorrow and I think everybody is improving, as the track condition is changing and we have to continue to adapt to it. Right now Jorge is the toughest rival and we must be vigilant.

“Tyre degradation will be the key to the race because I think everyone will be struggling for rear grip in the last laps.

“Since Holland I've got again last year's feeling. In the first part of the season I wasn't able to be constant with the lap pace. Maybe for one lap the speed was the same [with the 2015 or 2014 chassis], but to be constant in the race is much better.”

Rossi and Lorenzo have both made clear that Marquez is not out of title contention. "Marc is at the moment far, but it depends on the results in the next races. If he starts winning he can get very close," said Lorenzo on Saturday.

Marquez has won two of the nine races so far this year. Pedrosa is without a victory since Brno 2014, when Marquez's perfect run of ten straight wins came to an end.

‘This is a big problem’ - Rossi talks eighth place start

MotoGP championship leader Valentino Rossi was left an equal season-worst eighth on the grid for Sunday's Indianapolis Grand Prix.

The Italian was 0.627s slower than Honda pole holder Marc Marquez, while Movistar Yamaha team-mate and title rival Jorge Lorenzo claimed third on the grid.

“Yesterday I was very slow and a bit worried, and we didn't start with a good base setting. Today the situation has improved, especially my pace is not so bad,” Rossi said.

“In FP4 I was in fourth position and I raised my level and my potential a lot and also the life of the tyre is longer, but unfortunately in qualifying I wasn't strong enough to start from the second row.

“I hit traffic, made mistakes and I have to start from the third row. This is a big problem because I'm not very fast here and we still have some problems with the bike that we have to improve, we have to make a step for tomorrow.

“I think fighting for the podium tomorrow will be hard, because Marc and Jorge are very strong, but at this track like at Sachsenring also Dani is very fast, so it will be difficult.”

Rossi had been fourth fastest - behind Marquez, Lorenzo and Pedrosa - during final practice, the session dedicated to race pace.

Rossi starts Sunday's race 13 points ahead of Lorenzo and 65 points clear of Marquez.

Lorenzo: It was a dangerous moment

"It was a dangerous moment and I had a lot of pressure to make the last lap in the best way possible" - Jorge Lorenzo.

As the chequered flag waved in qualifying, Jorge Lorenzo was staring at an eighth place start in Sunday's Indianapolis MotoGP.

But Lorenzo made his last lap count and vaulted onto the front row in third, behind the Repsol Honda's of Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa, while team-mate and title rival Valentino Rossi was left to inherit the unwelcome eighth place.

“I was in eighth place, so it was a dangerous moment and I had a lot of pressure to make the last lap in the best way possible. As precise and as perfect as I could,” Lorenzo said. “I did, so I was proud of it and it saved me a big moment, because to start in the third or fourth row is always a big problem at the beginning of the race.”

The Spaniard had been fastest from Marquez in both Friday sessions and admitted he expected to make more progress.

“Being honest I expected to improve a little e bit more the bike than I did today. We tried many settings and we couldn't improve really the setting of yesterday was really good,” he said “Tomorrow in the warm-up we have the last chance to improve the bike.

“But anyway I think that - maybe not with the softer tyre, where the Honda riders seem more explosive - but with the hard tyre I have a really constant pace and especially after 10 or 15 laps I could be even stronger. This is a good thing for tomorrow. So let's try to improve one or two tenths in the warm-up.

“My strategy is to fight for the win. If it's not possible, obviously Valentino is first in the championship so for the moment he don't have one of the best pace but he is always competitive in the race, so for sure it will be difficult to stay in front of him. But if we can improve the bike a bit and I can keep the pace I had this morning I can fight to follow Marc.”

Lorenzo, beaten by Rossi at the last two rounds, is currently 13 points behind the Italian.

Marquez heads Honda qualifying one-two

Marc Marquez takes pole position for the Indianapolis MotoGP.

Marc Marquez will start his quest for a fifth straight Indianapolis victory from pole position.

The Repsol Honda star dominated the 15-minute Q2 shootout, his pole time of 1m 31.88s coming on only his second lap, with team-mate Dani Pedrosa later slotting into second place (+0.171s).

Friday leader Jorge Lorenzo has looked the only rider capable of challenging Marquez for race pace this weekend, but the Movistar Yamaha rider was down in eighth as the chequered flag waved in qualifying.

Fortunately for the Spaniard he made his last lap count, clinching the final front row place in third (0.302s), having joined Pedrosa in opting for a three-run strategy.

Filling Sunday's second row will be top satellite rider Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda), plus Danilo Petrucci (Pramac Ducati) and Bradley Smith (Tech 3 Yamaha) - the trio separated by less than a tenth of a second.

World championship leader Valentino Rossi couldn't emulate team-mate Lorenzo's late charge, instead dropping to eighth after Ducati's Andrea Iannone gained ground on his final lap.

After an early pit stop, Rossi had been third at the end of his opening qualifying run, but didn't improve thereafter. Rossi starts Sunday's race with a 13-point lead over Lorenzo and 65-point advantage over Marquez.

Suzuki's Maverick Vinales will start alongside Rossi on the end of row three, with Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati), Pol Espargaro (Tech 3) and Aleix Espargaro (Suzuki) forming row four.

Petrucci and Dovizioso reached Q2 via the Qualifying 1 session. Petrucci used a tow from the #4 to briefly hold fourth on the grid with one-minute of Qualifying 2 to go.

MM93 and JL99 both went down during the morning warm-up. MM entered turn 1 a bit hot, and washed out the front while braking, resulting in a fast but minor lowside. JL's could have been worse, as it was the rear that lost grip, resulting in the start of a classic bucking bike, but JL managed to lowside, minimizing personal damage. Both riders are perfectly fine.

Crazy scenes for the moto3 race...
Moto3 was definitely a Charlie Foxtrot. Luckily, the rain didn't have such a heavy effect on the standings. I think the only real mover in the Championship was Fenati. Everybody safely made it through the day, and Kent still has a huge lead.
