Finally we are under way for this what looks to be awesome 2017 season!! All the talk is over now, time to race!! Biggest 2 things im looking forward to seeing is how MV will do race after race with intense pressure on him, and how will JL99 do on that Duc, will he get her dialed in..... Cant wait to find out

About the circuit

The fabulous Losail International Circuit lies on the outskirts of Doha, the capital city of Qatar. Built in little over a year, the track cost $58 million USD and required round-the-clock dedication from almost 1,000 workers in order to get it ready for the inaugural event - the Marlboro Grand Prix of Qatar on the 2nd October 2004.
The track itself is a flowing layout of 5.4 kilometres, surrounded by artificial grass designed to prevent sand from the neighbouring desert from blowing onto the circuit. The main straight is over a kilometre in length and there is a good mix of medium and high-speed corners, including a couple of quick left-handers which has proved particularly popular with the riders.
In 2008 Qatar celebrated the first night time Grand Prix in history, following the construction of permanent outdoor lighting. The switch to night time racing was a success and has continued to be so, with the Qatar event now established as one of the most spectacular on the MotoGP calendar.

MV impressive first FP on the Yam!! Folger also very impressive time

Maverick Vinales leads the first practice session of the 2017 season, in Qatar on Thursday, beating his best lap in the recent test.

Repsol Honda team-mates Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa were the only riders within one-second of Vinales.

There were falls for Sam Lowes, Jack Miller and Karel Abraham while Cal Crutchlow was forced to pull off track early on due to smoke from the engine of his LCR Honda.

Track conditions have remained dry, but an extra MotoGP session will be added to the end of Thursday's schedule if it rains in the next two hours.

If the rain stays away, the MotoGP riders will be back on track for FP2 and FP3 on Friday...

Redding Takes top time in FP2, rain may come for FP3 lots of guys wanted to get in good times, MV went down but is fine...

Scott Redding takes over at the top of the timesheets during a hectic FP2 session in Qatar, but his best lap time is some 0.7s behind the Thursday best of Maverick Vinales.

Vinales suffered his first fall as a Yamaha rider after losing the front of his M1, on his way to fifth position.

FP3, after which the top ten riders will receive direct access to Qualifying 2, takes place later this evening.

A rain storm soaked the circuit earlier in the day, but conditions have remained dry since...

I think VR46 has been planting the seed all winter that MV25 is the man to beat. Rossi obviously has a history of playing head games though, so maybe he's been sandbagging his times in tests and practice. The last few years, Vale hasn't usually been the fastest in practice and qualifying, but when race day arrives, he finds a way to get the pace. Based on what I've seen over the winter, though, Maverick really is the guy to beat in the Yamaha garage. However, race pace simulations seem to suggest MM93 is gonna have the edge in the races. While Viñales was setting fastest laps during all the tests, Marquez was quietly putting in the more consistent sustained runs.

I'm ready to stop speculating and find out....

On another note, I love a lot of the new color schemes on the bikes, throughout the classes. I've always loved flat paint schemes (instead of gloss) and there seems to be a lot of them this year. My favorite is the premier class KTM, but wow, that bike is way behind the rest in terms of performance. I hope they improve as quick as Suzuki has.

Yeah Im looking forward to the 2017 season as well...just purchased the moto gp video pass. Im interested to see how much the new aerodynamics will effect the bikes...cause i know they eliminated the winglets that were allowed last year...it looked weird but i guess it made a big difference. Good luck Marquez!

JL99 just missing out on Q2, Vale just making it, i wouldnt count out either of them Sunday, Although it looks like if MV and MM get away it could be all but over for everyone else..
the BIG concern now is RAIN, Great read as usual from David on the weather - Round Up https://motomatters.com/analysis/2017/03/25/2017_qatar_friday_motogp_round_up_wild.html
"A growing sense of, not panic, perhaps, but certainly concern is enveloping the MotoGP paddock in Qatar. The ever unstable weather is forcing the series organizers to make contingency plans for every possible scenario the conditions in the desert may throw up. Heavy rains which have been sweeping across the peninsula have made it uncertain how and when the race is to be held. It could be Sunday night in the wet, it could be Sunday afternoon, it could even be Monday."

Maverick Vinales leads FP3 at the Qatar MotoGP and stays on top of the combined practice timesheets courtesy of his FP1 lap.

Meanwhile the likes Jorge Lorenzo missed out on a top ten place and will need to take part in Qualifying 1.

As in the earlier FP2 session, many riders struggled to improve on their Thursday lap times during FP3, grip levels having changed after an earlier rain storm.

There were early falls for Danilo Petrucci and Jonas Folger, while the side of Scott Redding's fairing then popped open on the main straight. Redding and Cal Crutchlow fell at the end of the session...

FP3:
1. Maverick Viñales ESP Movistar Yamaha MotoGP (YZR-M1) 1m 54.834s [Lap 17/17] 340km/h (Top Speed)
2. Andrea Iannone ITA Team Suzuki Ecstar (GSX-RR) 1m 54.848s +0.014s [16/17] 338km/h

Been glued to the Moto G P dotcom Video Pass. MV is soooo damn fast. Gonna be a great race.
My personal opinion is that Video Pass is worth every penny. We get all the tests (sort of), practices, qualifying, races, press conferences, etc. Probably well over a dozen hours of coverage for each race weekend - I definitely don't mind when my subscription gets auto-renewed every year.

UPDATED:

QP cancelled, Viñales on pole with grid formed from practice
MotoGP™ grid for the #QatarGP decided by combined timings after FP3
Tags MotoGP, 2017, GRAND PRIX OF QATAR, Q2
After overnight rain, a storm and too much standing water on track at Losail International Circuit, the original timetable for Saturday at the #QatarGP saw some adjustments before the decision was taken by Race Direction to cancel track action for the day.

Track conditions were deemed too dangerous to enable riders to get out on track – and with little chance of improvement as rain and lightning began again.

So it’s combined times after the end of FP3 that will decide the grid ahead of Sunday. What does that mean? This:

Maverick Viñales (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) will start from his first pole for Yamaha. Team Suzuki Ecstar’s Andrea Iannone and reigning Champion Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) join him on the front row.

The second row is: Johann Zarco (Monster Yamaha Tech 3), Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team), and Scott Redding (Octo Pramac Racing) in sixth.

The third row – so from P7 to P9 – is Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda Team), Jonas Folger (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) and Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda).

Nine-time World Champion Valentino Rossi heads up Row 4 in tenth, ahead of Danilo Petrucci (Octo Pramac Racing). Jorge Lorenzo is in 12th on his debut with the Ducati Team.

yeah, been along winter, waiting for motogp racing, I'd say the pressure is already pretty high on MV with the performance he has brought to bear on a New bike and in a New class. The new guy has everyone else looking like a rookie lol. Rooting for vale but i think his tires are permanently under inflated. Got to be tough seeing Mav blast around the track on the bike he, vale, largely responsible for building but cant make it happen himself. Not the stuff confidence is made of. I'd love to see dani get it together and win a championship, hes getting long in the teeth too. Im afraid its gonna be a boring race with Mav 3 sec ahead for the whole shooting match.
