am i missing something here?
during the interview, hayden claims that his brake line(s) was damaged after hopkins slammed into him on the rear left of hayden's rc 212v.
how the hell did hayden's brake line get damaged when the brakes are on the right side of the bike? i figured that hopkins would've damaged hayden's sprocket or something, not the brakes.

hopkins did hit him. hayden was ahead of hopkins.
It's the other way around. If you watch the aerial shot Nicky ran wide, and Hopper took advantage and squeezed in, but Nicky quickly corrects his line and not seeing Hopper coming in runs into him. It was Nicky's mistake as he should have held his line but that's racing.

As soon as I saw it happen at the beginning of the race I almost flipped... I believe my exact words were, "holy sh!t.. f#c%ing Nicky ya fackin prick, way to Padrosa it up.." I got a few looks for that one...

it was an ugly incident to start the race with thats for sure.....

rtalk about an upset, i called all american podium, i should have picked all aussie instead!!!

yeah - but how cool was it that Hopper got his ass back to the pits and fixed his bike quick and then hauled ass for the rest of the race - catching up to and passing Nicky B4 Nicky finally pulled off for a DNF.

Hopper still got points & money even after a crash - I konw Nicky is on a Honda and Hopper is on a Suzuki (for now) but I gotta give that kid props for putting in the effort - even after there was no way he was gonna win.

I'm watching the race now and just saw that contact on the andretti hairpin.
All 4 went wide on that turn; Pedro, Stoner, Hayden, and Hopkins.
Hayden picked a bad spot to sit cuz Stoner kept pushing him out wider and wider.
It looked like hopkins adjusted his line cuz he picked up his bike in the middle of the turn.
Knee down on entry....Knee UP before the 2nd apex....
I'll wait for the aerial view to see from the other angles.
But hey, "that's racing." The scramble for the first couple of corners are always exciting.

The aerial video shows that one of the red bikes on the inside of Hayden ran wide forcing hayden to check up. (I think is was 65 Capirossi) Hopkins had momentum and saw the opening so he went for it. I don't think Hayden knew Hopkins was there.

I agree with the above. Nicky was pushed wide, then corrected and had no idea Hopper was there, and it was unintentional. I was upset because it put two Americans out of contention for the podium.

Yup that's what I heard - race bikes can sometimes have an adjuster cable running from the brake lever to the left bar so the lever can be adjusted without letting off the throttle. Apparently it was this adjuster that made a mess of Hoffman's hand when Guintoli crashed into him entering the Corkscrew

IMO, I will put all the blame on Hopkins. He was hot-headed all weekend. It was Hopkins that cut back in from behind Hayden. And Hopkins never likes Nicky being in front of him.

Looking at the helicopter shot, Nicky was being forced wide by Casey Stoner who made a textbook mistake at Laguna Seca: Go into T2 too hot to end up blowing it wide. Hayden stood it back up to avoid a possible crash with Stoner. There WAS a little opening between the two, when Stoner turned-in and Hayden felt it was safe to turn-in.

It IS racing, but that gap is too small to shoot at such an early stage of the race. Hopkins has got to have a better judgment that Hayden isn't going to see him and that's why it's an unwritten law that "it's the guy-in-front's line." You could see in that small window, Hopkins decided to twist the throttle and basically shot into Hayden correcting his line.

It is "racing", but it's too early in the race to be exploiting a small gap like that. The gain did not outweigh the risks. That being said, the brake adjuster was said to be damaged. For these bikes, the brake adjuster is on the left side so that adjustments can be made with the non-throttle hand.

That being said, when Hayden was in the pit, he was gesturing that the brake lever wasn't right, at which point, Benson began inspecting the master cylinder as well as, the brake fluid reservoir, pulling off the wristband that riders put on there. It could have been that the crash with Hopkins damaged the brake line connecting to the left front caliper.

Perhaps, it introduced some air or something that cause a progressive decrease in braking power and as Hayden attempted to compensate with the lever adjuster, it was such that they'd have to re-do the brakes. The brake adjuster isn't something that I'd think would lead to a DNF. But air in the brakes and loss of braking power... Yes, that's a DNF.

I wouldn't want to be coming down T1 through 5th gear on a GP bike only having to pop it down to 2nd on braking and find there're no brake power!
