So I am changing my oil and everything is fine. When I go to fill the oil up, it fill it up to slightly below the max mark. I started the bike up for 2 minutes, then shut it off. When I looked in the site glass, I saw no oil...wtf gives? I then started to fill it up with more oil and it's almost 4qtrs and still NO oil on the sight glass...wtf gives?

You probably had it on the side stand? proper reading is done while level, both horizontally and vertically.

if not, you have to remember that the oil filter is bone dry. when you shut the bike down, the anti drain back valve slaps shut and all the oil inside the filter remains there.

Just load 3 Quarts total and be done with it.

It is on the pitbull stand....I'll drain some back out then i guess
yes, do that. you have entirely too much oil in there. it's a good thing you posted up! having too much oil in it for extended periods of time can destroy the engine!

just remember, that a rear stand is not enough to keep it level. if you're careful enough, you can tip it and look at the same time while on two wheels. it takes practice.

did you wait 5 minutes before checking?

the oil has to drain a bit into the pan.

trust me. 3.1 Qts will be precisely what it requires when changing the oil and filter.

i know this sounds crazy...but are you SURE that you're not looking at the window and seeing it completely full of oil? You wont see a line if the level is too high.

sounds retarded, I know...but I've done it in the past. Couldnt remember if I had measured out 2 or 3 quarts from the huge jug of oil I had (got interrupted), then added too much because what I thought was an empty window was actually just a completely full window.

Drain the oil, and start again.

my guess is...it takes time for the oil to fill the oil filter?

i always fill my oil while perpendicular from the floor...till i see the oil level at high mark.

then i start the engine to let the oil go down a bit. and i fill it up again till it gets to 3/4 full from low marker to high marker.

how does having too much oil in it destroy the engine. i can understand having too little oil destroying the engine.. but too much would just affect performance no? please enlighten me on this topic.

lack of low oil pressure for starters. What happens is the crankshaft "whips" the oil in the oil pan into a foam. The foamed oil is then pushed through the lubrication system. The air bubbles causes a drop in oil pressure and less oil is delivered to moving parts. This results in increased wear, lower fuel economy, higher temperatures and generally just a Whole Lot Of Bad Things. Gaskets can be busted, engine seals, excessive splashed lubrication can lead to unwanted deposits, etc. ect. etc... the list is long.

but remember, it CAN cause engine failure, not will (or does like you said).
