I just started working at a car dealership as a "product specialist". Pretty much will be doing everything the sales consultants or "salesman" do but they are trying out this new position as the only difference is how they pay us "product specialists" and salesman.

The sale consultants here typically get paid min wage + commission.. while the product specialists get paid a higher base pay + a lower commission only if i sold 10 cars or more for the month.

I see the obviously pro's and cons but would like to hear any other person's insight on how it affects customers and employees or any experience the .net fam has with buying or selling cars.

I'm sub contracted at a honda dealer and quite frankly there's only about 2 salesmen I am willing to even tolerate the rest took stupid pills or something. We have the "specialist" as well and those 2 guys are it. tthey are about the only ones that can do their job so I think having the title helps your mentality a lil. its like hey I'm now a specialit I prob need to have my sh** in order. Like ego boost kinda. Jmo

The goal I assume is to take the pressure to "sell" per se off the salesman which in turn should bolster better Customer Service - right sell vs. up sell.

The volume sales person though will suffer as it reduces their ability to earn more with higher commission.

All I can say is have the best product knowledge, never tell a customer you don't how this and that works. I work for a Ford dealership as a dent guy. (Pdr). I can't tell you how many times a day sales comes back to get me to explain to the customer how sync works or what the settings do and blah blah blah. I see in the customer face that they are thinkn this sale person is a Fn idiot. Now the customer will call me or stop back in to see me to help them out. That's the most rewarding part is to have someone leave and be completly happy with the customer service they got for me. Then they will always come back to me to work on their car. Sell for tomorrow not today! Good luck!
