Ok here it goes. I got my bike painted alone with engine covers. Now my bike won't start. It will pop start and run great thougt! When I crank it over it slowly cranks for five seconds at most and then nothing. I bought new battery and plugs. It will start with s car battery and the charger hooked up on the charge setting but still rolls over slow. When it. Cranks over it drops to 9 volts but its not the battery. The three batteries I've tried will start my other bi. It's an 04 with 7500 miles. If I hook cables straight to starter it still cranks slow and only s couple seconds. Does anyone have any ideas?!

I would have to agree with Demented. A bad starter could pull a lot more amps than a good one, that's why the battery drops to 9V. Good battery or bad battery can only push so much current and once something tries to pull more than the battery is able to... the voltage starts dropping.

I do have a starter from an extra '06 motor (I'd imagine it will work for '03 - '06) if you're interested, PM me.

I thought starter too but didn't want to go out and buy one incase I was wrong. Guy at my local shop hooked a jump pack up to it and said it was good. I didn't think that was a good test and ended up leaving. Is there anything else to check? I would be interested if it works. I don't know how to pm. If its still good name your price. Thanks guys. I have missed two weeks of good riding and I don't want to take it to a shop.

Hooking up a jump pack isn't a good way of testing. The proper way is by testing the current pull from the starter, which you already did. If you can live with bump starting the bike, no harm will come from that.

You could remove the starter and take it apart, clean off the brushes and everything and hope that it fixes it.

When you had the starter removed, did you hook the starter to your battery and see if you get the same slow turning and voltage drops?
That's the last thing you can really test.

But it can also determine if there is an issue inside the gearbox/transmission leading to hard starts by an increased load on the starter.

+1 on the starter. if the battery checks good and the bike is charging good and running then your starter is most likely going tits up.

The new starter does the same thing. Drops to 8.5 when I crank it. I don't want to have to pop start it all the time

Well I figured it out! When I took the cover off the intermediate gear fell out and when I put it back together I put the washer on the wrong side of the gear pushing it into the case and it wouldn't spin freely. It starts! Thanks for all your imput
