I have a 2003 600rr, the bike gets to 220, the fan turns on and the temperature continues to move up. Flushed the system, its now running distilled water and water wetter, it has a brand new thermostat and seal and radiator cap. I burped the system and I can't see any leaks even though I suspect I might be losing fluid. The temperatures spike way too fast. I've researched and read many post and I still can't pint point the issue. I gonna have the system pressure tested. Any advice?

pressure test will tell you what is going on.....possible rad leak from pinhole....but should be visible after a while...

OR; (remote possibility, bike history needed)

possible mix of 2 different coolants has coated the inside of the rad with shite.

ethylene glycol and other types of coolants are not compatible.

?

I flushed the systen 3 times before switching to the distilled/ww combo. I'm gonna remove all the fairings and check the clamps and hoses and look at the bottom of the radiator. This is very frustrating.

Is your waterpump functioning or your radiatior plugged? It would seem like the radiatior is fine based on the fact you flushed it but unless something is pumping fluid throughout the system you're screwed.

Service manual will tell you how to check it.

I see no leaks coming from the pump, I burped the system again today and there was bubbles. It seems like pump is working; I see flow through the cap, Im just not sure that the "right flow" looks like. I rode it on the highway today and heat dissipated quickly. However, once at a stop it climbed quickly. It needs lots of airflow to cool off. Could the radiator be heat soaking from the header?

Also, after 210 degrees the coolant starts to overflow hard out of the radiator when I was trying to burp it.

I needed to burp hoses numerous times when i changed rad fluid several weeks ago.

saw only a mild flow past rad cap when following flush /fill procedur....there is a good thread (sticky) on this, that worked well for me.

Search OTF.

hint....don't run bike much past 180 while cap is off

I'll burp the system again today. My neighbors probably hate me by now, lol. I'll go for a ride and see if I can record the temperature. Last night while in the highway temperatures were 177° if no cars in front of me at about 50 mph plus. When I slow down and stop, it spikes all the way to 223° in about 30 seconds or less but it stays there. Which is much better.

Started the bike today. From a cold start it took about 13 mins to get it up to 221°. The fan came on and cooled the bike the way it was supposed to. I smelled coolant coming from under the steering, but it could just be my mind playing tricks on me. I didn't see any smoke. I'm gonna order a pressure tester and get back to it next weekend. I need to ride it and see how it responds. Also, the coolant level went down a bit.

mine smelled also after a coolant change.

fan should come on at 220 so sounds ok....

"coolant level went down a bit", where?

bottle or at rad fill point?

The fluid went down a bit at the bottle. I didn't check the rad. Took a ride and whenever I slowed down the temp would go up 2 -5 degrees in a second or two. I gotta manta in consistent airflow. Seems weird.

Are you loosing coolant? not leaking but burning. Your not leaking fluid, your getting adequate circulation due to your new thermostat unless your Water pump is done. Process of elimination assuming you did the coolant flush right, you most likely have a broken water pump or a blown head gasket. You don't have to burn white smoke to have a blown head gasket, it could be a very small leak that can progress to a bigger leak. I would Keep than in mind since you already mentioned about loosing cooling fluid.

Yeah, I'm afraid it might be the head gasket. I've yet to pressure test the system. I rode it last weekend, and it blew white smoke for a second when I started it, and then 5 minutes later it blew white smoke for a second again. I haven't seen any smoke since. I started the bike and kept my hand to the exhaust for a while and there was no condensation, the oil appears to have no other fluid in it. Also, I did see some white smoke coming from under the bike while at a stop once.

I was under the impression that you wouldn't have to burp the system on the CBR since it's an open system. The air should just find it's way to the overflow bottle and eventually be forced out?
