I bought a 2008 CBR600RR a few months ago, it's a track only bike with a full arata titanium exhaust and a PC3 USB unit. The bike has a strange problem. When I am taking a left hand corner and tip the bike left the throttle will chop badly like it's running out of fuel, because of this I can't hold a steady throttle mid corner. Strangely this does not happen when I corner right.

I asked the previous owner about it and he said it's due to the HRC quick throttle and I just have to be careful with it. Unfortunately that is not quite the issue since I am quite a smooth rider to begin with and I have ridden other bikes with quick throttles before and never had this issue. In addition this is happening only on the left side. I rode a friend's R6 recently which has a very aggressive quick throttle and had virtually no issue with chop mid corner.

I spoke to another guy knowledgeable about tuning and he said it could be that the bike is running way rich. It infact is, there is a substantial amount of black soot in the exhaust and one person behind me once mentioned that he saw fuel being thrown out of my exhaust!!!

Well, I've downloaded the map off the bike and i'm looking at it and it matches up EXACTLY to the map that is available for a full arata on the power commander website.

Why would a map available on the power commander site run so rich as to not perform correctly? I find that odd. Any other issues that could be causing this problem?

Those maps are guesses. Spend the time and money for a real tune. That said, I doubt that's the problem with your left turn issue. It almost sounds like something electrical that's being triggered by the bikes position.

I hope it isn't electrical...those types of issues can be virtually impossible to fix. Now I am thinking the previous guy pulled a fast one on me...sigh!

I would definetlly start with a good dyno tune to get a good map and tell the tuner you have a problem with abrupt throttle mid corner. You could also take off tank and air box and lay the bike over on its side and operate the throttle to see if any thing is binding or sticking.

My bike also had abrupt mid corner throttle responce, although both ways. Part of the problem is the stock ecu is set-up for emissions so on decell (off throttle) the fuel gets shut off to the injectors, so when you go to roll the throttle back on you go from no fuel to lots of fuel for the anticitated acceleration. I have heard good tuners can tune that out, but i got an HRC ecu for my 07 race bike and that totally got rid of all that abruptness, my favorate mod to the bike so far. Made pushing it hard in corners, when you're just on the edge of traction, so much easier and confidance inspiring. The HRC ecu also bumps the idle speed up to 2200rpm from the 1400rpm stock, which also helps. You could use ECU-unleashed who can muck with your stock ecu and bump up the idle speed and tune out that abruptness.

I doubt if there's an ignition problem.

Thanks, it could be a bit tricky trying to tilt the bike and operate the throttle, I may have to get some assistance with that but it's a good idea :)

I have been told that getting the Autotune system is better than getting a dyno tune as it's the same cost and a better value. I'm not too familiar with Autotune but why would it be an advantage?

How probable is it that the issue is electrical? The bike has no problems whatsoever at any rpm while riding straight up! It also starts up great in all temps, no starting problems at all. I would imagine that if it's an electrical issue such as a loose contact then it would be intermittent no? The issue I am having is very consistent and happens always at a certain rpm when cornering.

thanks Javy. That was one hunch as well, however I would imagine if the bank angle sensor triggered it would just shut off the engine and not come back on. Someone suggested it could be a malfunction with the FI sensor but if that was the case why would it run perfectly upright??

The auto tuner is just easier, but i wouldn't say it's better. A good tuner with a dyno, i believe you would be happier with the results. They can massage the map in certain areas to smooth out transitions. The auto tuner relys on a preset target A/F ratio and hope's the computer gathers enough info at that RPM/throttle setting to arrive at that A/F ratio.

Bank angle sensor should be checked or another tried. We remove it on our race bikes, can't remember the wires we short together, just know it's not the power and ground.

Well, I spoke to someone at a dyno shop today and he advised me to first switch to the stock map to see if the issue goes away. However, he thinks it could be the bank angle sensor. Another thing he recommended was a fuel injector service as the bike has 9000 miles and given it's a 2008 that's not a lot of miles for a 6 yr old bike.

The dyno run costs $350 which is pretty damn pricey... I am trying to see if it's absolutely necessary or if I can use a map that would give me acceptable results. My goal is not to gain max HP...I just want the bike to run properly even if I lose any performance gains afforded by the full exhaust. I will consider any performance tuning later.

Sounds like a fuel pump issue?
Fuel sloshing to one side and pump picks up air
Btw if you need a pc3 map for the track I'll send you one

Well, what is strange is that I tilted the bike about 40 degrees or so and held about 9K rpms steady and the bike did not jerk at all... now I am confused LOL!

I know it's tough pill to swallow $ wise, but by how rich your bikes running, i think you'll be really happy with a good dyno tune. Don't try to over think this, you've got a problem, fix it first, then if you still have an issue with the left turns go after that, fix the fueling first.

this turned out to be nothing more than a loose throttle cable..arrgh! why didn't I try adjusting the simpler things first. geez!

Whew I'm glad for you!

I didn't click this link for quite a while because I half expect it to be a Viagra advertisement.
