im stumped guys! So here it goes... I have a 05 CBR600rr

background... im not really sure. got the bike in on a trade. it hasnt ran for years from what im told. electrical issue. ended up just being some bad relays.

got it running and it ran great. crisp throttle response smooth idle. rode it around for a day and seemed to do great. never got hot or missed a lick.

the next day i go out to fix a leak at the water pump lower hose. loose hose clamp seemed easy enough. tightened it and fixed that problem. ride it around the block everything was perfect.

i open the radiator cap and my worst fear... oil spots rising to the surface.

not much so it seems to have just happened.

soo i drain the oil and to my surprise i find no coolant in the oil.

i start doing hours of research and apparently on the older model 600's they had seals on the oil cooler that would go bad. on the 05 its a stand alone unit.

but now that i have coolant in the oil too i figured head gasket right??

well i pull it all apart (engine out, head off) and what do i find??

NOTHING!! no signed of bad head gasket? no cracks that I can see in the head or block....

am i missing something????:banghead:

i really wanna ride this thing. its my first bike and funds are very limited.

i ordered a new head gasket.

should i just clean it really well and put new gasket on and see what happens?

could i have caught it early enough to where it would not have shown any signs of being bad??

thanks for the help guys!

the weep hole is not plugged.

doesnt that mean that only oil should get into the coolant and not coolant in the oil?

Hang on. You said you had no coolant in the oil... But you have coolant in the oil?

Anyway, there aren't many ways to get communication between the coolant and oil circuits beyond the water pump, oil cooler, head gasket or something cracked.

You seem to know what's going on, you'll just have to do some digging

welll it started with only oil in the coolant but now its both oil in the coolant and coolant in the oil.

so is it possible that the coolant could get in the oil any other way then head gasket?

Yep, the head. Crack that sucker and you're toast.

Did you have the head tested before you put it back on?

Other than that there is the oil cooler. Pull it off and pressurise it (coolant side) to 15 psi and leave it overnight, if it doesn't drop significant pressure you're all good.

so cracked head?

i dont mind buying a cylinder head.

would a crack in the head be noticable?

could it be a crack in the block? what is more likely?

should I buy a hole new (used) motor off of ebay??

thanks for your imput thus far!

and I have not put it all back together yet.

the gasket gets here on friday and i ordered a complete used cooling system including water pump and oil cooler.

should i try it by putting all this stuff back together or am i wasting my time?

i know its hard to judge when you cant see the parts yourself.

but given the info ive given you what would you personally do?

Personally with it all apart I'd have the head crack tested and test the oil cooler.

And nope, I've never seen a cracked head without the help of mag particle or fluoro dye etc.

ok, thanks for all your replies.

I think what im going to do is just buy a used head.

Itll cost me almost just as much to have mine tested. so may as well just spend the money once right?

Then you need to find somewhere else to get it tested... or buy the kit. It's not hard to do.

well I put a new water pump on it and an oil cooler along with a new head gasket. soooo if it leaks now it will be something major, along the lines of cracked head or block. so we will see.

You're going to go very poor if you spend your life doing repairs by throwing parts at symptoms without actually identifying the source of the issue.

Just saying.....

well I got it all put together! problem solved!

thanks for the help guys.

and ya your right about throwing parts at it. I just thought i would spend a little and if it didnt work sell the thing. I got it in on a trade so no money in it except for the parts.

I do have another issue though. My gauge cluster lights up and the nuetral light works the signal lights work and the clock works. tach doesnt work. temp doesnt work. and fuel level doesnt work.

any ideas? bad cluster?

checked all the fuses and connecters. everything is good to my eyes.
