I have recently been having issues that (using a search) led me to believe that my "symptoms" (battery randomly lost its charge) were caused by the stator on the '03s getting to hot. The only fix provided was to replace the '03 stator with one from an 05-06. I think it was Moman who said that. I just found my meter this morning and decided to check the voltage on the battery, charge it, and then get some numbers from my bike.

The battery read 12.6v its about 2 months old
Ignition on - 11.9v
Starter turning- 8.5v
Running @ Idle- 17.6v
Running at 5k - 16.5v

Now sometimes I go on a short ride (5 mins) and I can stop and restart the bike. Sometimes on like 15 minute rides, if I turn it off it will crank over slow and I have to roll start it. The bike runs fine when its running, and the battery shows just above 12.v although I have not been able to meter the battery aftter I ride it and it wont start again.. SO Im pretty sure that Its charging to high, and/or I have a shorted cell on the battery. I have also heard that when batterys get hot, the plates inside can move and not make a good contact.. Any Ideas? Thanks for any help guys.

What amperage were you charging the battery at before the test? The reason I ask is when I first got my bike, I put it on a quick charge, which was way too high of an amperage. If I checked the voltage after charging, the voltage would read really high like that, I guess because it still hasn't come down all the way yet after the charge.

When the voltage regulator went south on my 03, I was told that when it fails, it can go either way. Charge too high, or too low. Did you actually change the regulator out? Or have you not done it yet?

When I took the battery out of the bike, I put it on a 1.5Amp trickle charge, and it shut off, fully charged in about an hour. I have not replaced the regulator, nor do I know where it is.. :) The battery was pretty cheap, I wonder if a shorted cell could mess with the charging voltage. I'm gonna go for a spin in a few minutes and meter the battery when it wont start, just to see what it looks like.

17.6v consistantly at an idle seems way to high to me. My money is on your regulator. I think there is a thread on here somewhere that explains how to test it.

The regulator itself mounts up on the left lower side of the bike behind the fairing. It's right next to the header. If you get a new one off an 05 it will mount right up too.

I went for a ride and got some lunch. Tried to start it but it just chuged. I put my meter on it and it was 12.5v so the battery is trash from the high charging voltage. Im gonna see if I can figure out this regulator, and may get lucky finding a parts bike on Craigslist.

When you're ready to pick one up, I would suggest checking ebay. That's where I got mine.

I just did a quick search and found one going for $42/buy it now on ebay.
