Pedrosa's Manager Blames Hayden for Collision Seen 'Round the World
interesting spin from a former rider

Thursday, October 19, 2006
Former GP rider turned manager and tutor, Alberto Puig, blames Nicky Hayden for the collision that put both Repsol Honda riders on the ground last Sunday and decimated Nick Hayden's championship points lead.

Pedrosa admitted in the official HRC post-race press release that he made a grave error in judgment when he took Hayden down but Puig sees—or is that spins?—it differently.

In a report on a Spanish web site (both Pedrosa and Puig are Spanish, as is team sponsor Repsol) Puig is quoted as saying, "Dani had a mathematical chance, so who would obligate him not to race? He crashed because the other rider [Hayden] braked early, and he had to turn in. If that didn't happen, he wouldn't have crashed."

(Soup wryly notes: as long as we're talking longshots, Loris Capirossi had a mathematical chance at the title too. All it would take is for North Korea to perform their next nuclear test on the Estoril grid.)

Puig, who acts both as Pedrosa's manager and mentor in racing, said, "The first thing Hayden had to do was get in front, which he hasn't done all year. I know it's terrible for Honda and for Nicky, but it could have happened to anyone."

What did you expect him to say? That is like saying the rear end collision would not have happened if you didn't stop. Oh well......that's racing.

I didn't expect him to blame Hayden as it's the rider who is TRAILING who's responsibility it is to avoid hitting the rider in front.

That's racing 101....

Puig can not be THAT myopic!

That's picking the situation apart at a whole new level. Pedrosa should have stayed behind nicky but we all know the situation with honda when it comes to that, hindsight is always 20/20.

I have a mathematical chance......to win the lottery. Pedrosa had a slim chance at best. Let me try to win a poker game with a 2 and a 7 rather than a pair of ladies....Who is going to support me in that??

WOW, the more i read about pedrosa and puig the more i realize just how messed up that situation is. I didn't blame HRC at all for the team orders thing, thinking that surely someone nudged pedrosa with a little, "hey be careful around 69, eh?" even if they did say "no team orders" in public. but now i think that not only did they not do that, they can't even get through the wall of people telling pedrosa he's the greatest, better then hayden, the #1 guy at honda, etc. just crazy....that guy's delusional.

I didn't think you needed to give an order, that it was understood that team came first and rookies had to earn their stripes before they were allowed to challenge the big dog. Hayden should be upset and voice it as loud as possible, and puig should remember he represent Honda and you get more recognition if Honda has the # 1 tag.

You all should read the SportRider article on Pedrosa. Man, Puig has got that kid brainwashed. Pedrosa has got to be some sort of surrogate son for Puig, as if Puig hand picked him from a bunch of nobodies and now he owns him or something. It's just a weird relationship. I knew of this Puig blaming Hayden jive. Puig should work for an insurance company that only insures people that rear end people. Isn't it 100% your fault if you rear end someone? Yeah, that's what I thought...

By the way, Puig doesn't care about sponsorship. He could care less what Honda says. So, team order is nothing. Puig only cares about one thing: Seeing his protege become the highest scoring rookie in MotoGP, especially now that he can't be the youngest GP champion anymore...
