anyone using them on their RR's?
what about this spectre detector-detector crap?
online reviews say the Escort Passport 8500 X50 is the best, that cobras, etc. all suck.
i'm all for taking the risk of losing it, to save the 1/10 times i don't get stopped with one.
next question:
where to mount it on the bike?
cheers.

My experience is that Radar detectors will give you a higher chance of getting a ticket. In my car I have maybe been saved once by one. I have a sharp eye out for cops and usually catch them before the radar detector (if that stupid thing goes off anyways). Plus it goes off every time I pass a place with automatic doors. The false sense of security caused by a radar detector can get you a ticket and if you get stopped and the cop sees it he will have no mercy on you.

Wow, if you catch them before your radar goes off, either that's a REALLY cheap radar, or maybe the cop just doesn't have his laser on....I've got an escort and it's been working very well, for the car....thought about it for the bike but a few people told me it won't be as effective since you're really hanging it low and blocking A LOT of it's range with your body, guess it kinda made sense since radar detectors are supposed to be mounted high without obstacles blocking it's sight.

The newest Pasport 9500 I think it is, not sure, I sell it at work though, hehe. Well it has GPS built in and it records all the locations that have alarm systems in which set off the radar. So it will only go off if it is actually a cop.

It's a little pricey, but it's worth it.

i have the passport 8500 x50 in my Civic

it saved me a dozen times already, especially when you go on a road trip where you don't usually know where the cops are.

And VARider, I have no problem using it in VA since it's VG2 shielded. Just make sure you hide your radar detector where the cops can't see it.

I've had the world's best radar, the valentines.. trust me, it works when only cops turn on their radar. In Nj, the troopers are too smart to turn them on.. they just follow you and turn it on for 5 seconds and turn it back off.. sometimes it saves you but just ride slow =)

Where do yall mount them so the cops dont see em? and are most radars compatible with that helmet light up thing that blinks when it detects something?

I have escort 8500 x50. I mount it onto my bike with tech mount. I also use H.A.R.D hud so i don't have to keep my eyes on the radar constantly. IT save me quite a few times, especially up in the mountain range where the troopers like to hide around the curve or behind some bush. the new 9500 is great, but it still have some glitches that needs to be ironed out.

Btw, EP3hatch03, as far as i know, the 8500 isn't invisible to the Spectre 2, it can be detected by spectre as far as 2 thousand feet. So far, only the STI driver with magnesium case is completly invisble to the spectre 2.

As far as getting pulled over, I've been pulled over a lot. Not for speeding but they want to harass me for crap on my bike. My radar detector is right next to my DoD sticker, as soon as they see that, they slap my hands and let me go. Most of the time, they can't clock me, and there are times when they do but i'll be doing the speed limit because i know i am being clocked.

If you need stealthiness, you might need to get detectors that come in serveral modules that can be hidden. Or just get the STI driver, and mount it under your upper cowl and get the H.A.R.D system. Either way, don't get caught with it, it's a fatty ticket if you do in va.

I would go with a V1 or Escort nothing else.

V1 has saved me countless times. you can reprogram it (very easy) to disable X and K band. Therefore it only goes off from a Ka band or Laser, so no annoyances.

Basically radar detectors work extremely well on the highway. Depends on your area, but around here Ka is used on teh highway, and the V1 will pick em up everytime, very far in advance too. on the city streets though be careful, likely they will use Laser, and the radar detector will be useless as it will only pick it up when the laser hits you and the cop has his reading.

Sounds like someone whos just not using it properly.

You should never rely on a radar detector. always use your own scanning and brain to know when its least risky to speed, and when you do speed, the detector is simply an extra aid, nothing more.

my v1 can pick up laser pretty effectively. I remember as I was going up an overpass, it went off; the cop was on the median on the other side about 1/2 mile passed the overpass.

um dont you have a thread about possible loss of permit. wouldnt it be wiser to save your money for now and see what happens there.second how does a radar protect you from a plane, if your habit is to speed eventually you will pay for your habit one way[money, jail time, loss of job]or the other[faster your going the bigger the crash]

i agree. i blew by a cop car doing 185KPH, he didn't even blink at me, no catchup car waiting down the highway.
i think they can't see us until it's way too late.
and by then, we're so far ahead of them catching up, it's not worth it.
most cops i've ever talked to who own bikes, they say it's up to us.
ride or die, i guess.
cheers.
