Is it necessary to remove the cylinder drain bolt when changing fluid as per the service manual, or would just draining through the water pump be sufficient? It is pretty tight fit to the cylinder drain, and I really don't want to have to drop the exhaust if it's not necessary. Unless anyone knows of an easier way of getting to that bolt. Any ideas would be much appreciated...

Thanks for the help...But if you look at page 7 of the manual, the cylinder drain bolt is in a tight spot, just behind the headers, and I've tried just about everything trying to reach in and break that biatch loose, but just can't reach it  . That's my original question, does anyone know of an easy way to get to it (without having to drop the headers), OR, can I get by just draining as much of the fluid through the water pump as I can and leaving the cylinder drain alone...I'm starting to think of going with the latter solution, as surely the cylinder heads can't be holding that much coolant, could they?

try this... drain as much as you can through the water pump. then fill with just plain water. drive it around to get it flushed pretty well (keep an eye on the temp!) and then drain again through the water pump. that should get pretty much all of the old fluid out without having to remove the bolt you are having problems with, and even if there is some fluid left in the system it will be mostly water.

I did as Lucky suggested, just opening the pump drain, filled back with water, started bike up and circulated, drained again, and then added (distilled) water & water wetter. I didn't see anymore coolant in the water the second time I drained it. In short, it worked fine just draining through the pump. Hope this helps... :)

I did as lucky did as well. It's a process you only need to once if you're gonna run water wetter. After that you won't need to flush more than once. Be sure to use DISTILLED water when replacing, as it helps with corrosion protection. And be sure to flush it at LEAST once a year as watter doesn't have to corrision protection that glycol based antifreeze has.

I flushed my coolant system and had the same problem with the cylider head drain bolt until I got creative with my socket wrench set. Assemble the tool in this order.

1. use a short drive hex
2. the U-joint lookin thingy that allows you to use the tool at an angle (forget what its called)
3. Nice long extension
4. Ratchet

Put the wrench in between the #1 and #2 header pipes and works like a charm.
