That's a good write up... I need to do this soon. How much coolant does the system hold anyway? (just so I know how much new stuff to get, and how big a container I'll need for the old stuff I'll be draining.)

Like the link says, don't bother with the cylinder block drain plug. As per the instruction in the shop manual, I drained it. Absolutely a royal royal PITA to put the bolt back on. Totally not worth it for the little amount of coolant that comes out of it.

For a more complete flush (such as the case when racing or doing trackdays, when getting the system absolutely clear off glycol coolant is a necessity), I would do it this way..

1. Drain existing coolant following abadfish's steps. Be careful if the motor is warm -- hot coolant!
2. Plug up drain hole.
3. Refill with new coolant.
4. Put radiator cap back on.
5. Start motor.
6. Here's the important part. Keep engine running long enough to heat up and activate the thermostat (may take several minutes).

This gets the water pump to open up, and now coolant will actually be circulating through the ENTIRE plumbing system. If you do not do this, the coolant on the other side of the water pump (i.e. cylinder heads) doesn't make it out, and you are basically only draining the radiator.
7. Shut off engine.
8. Repeat 1-7 about 3 times.

On the final cycle, leave the radiator cap open and follow abadfish's directions on blipping the throttle to burp the system of air. It helps to squeeze some of the coolant hoses too. When you no longer see any bubbles in the radiator whenever you blip, you should be good to go.

i have motor oil in my radiator and i did a radiator flush with hot distilled water. i poured two gallons of boiling waters through followed by two gallons of room temp distilled water. yet there is still a little bit left. i was wondering if i should use any type of radiator cleaner? like the ones for cars?

Sounds like a blown head gasket....

Seal Washer Replacement???

Time to change the coolant so I am replacing with Engine Ice.
The service manual says to replace the "seal washer" on the water pump drain bolt.

Did anyone do this? Is this really necessary? seems to me this is like the crush washer on the oil pan?

I have not pulled it apart yet and wanted a heads up.
Thanks for your help.

So far so good

I talked to a lot of guys running Engine Ice. All said it makes a difference worth the effort. Some said the results were amazing, some said just a bit better.

Once a year is all you should need to flush unless you run a lot of track days. The local track just announced you can't run Engine Ice on the track anymore. Great. That was half the reason I wanted to change out the coolant.

I waited until it was time to change the coolant, it takes a little longer to get hot and cools faster once you get moving. Rain today so I did not get a chance to go on a long run. I am hoping for lower operating temps. I'll let you know my results.

In AZ with the heat, I was just looking for an edge against the high temps.

For those with Engine Ice...is it worth it? Do you have to drain and fill more often when running that stuff?

Why won't they let you run Engine Ice on the tack?
