I was servicing my chain today and checking to make sure everything was tight and i noticed that the whole hub and sprocket assembly had some play in it. Is there some kind of dampner inside the hub of the rear wheel maybe to absorb the shock of the drivetrain?

Yip. Its called the "cush drive" and it does indeed absorb drivetrain shock.

Can those cushes wear out, causing extra lash?...or something like that...you know
Suppose so? Rubber eventually perishes, and with the kind of repetitive compression that they endure, the deterioration must accelerate. But I've never heard of it happening. I had a 14 year old, 75000km Honda CBR400, and its cush drive was fine...
