There is a huge myth out there that states wider is better

You can put a 190/50/17 size tire on a 5.5x17" rim and it might look kewl and you might get laid but the tire shape gets pinched inwards and handling will suck. If you really want to try a wider on your stock rim maybe try a 190/55/17 or 190/60/17 size tire. The taller sidewall helps reduce the pinch factor.

As much as you might find this hard to believe your best option is to use the tire size specified for your bike which is a 180/55/17.

Supertireguy, I was under the impression that the 190/60 was too tall for the stock shock linkage on the RR. No?

I think its a 190... But that will make your RR less agile tho...
Not exactly...

I run a 190/55 and PREFER it over the 180.

Definatly true...thats why all the AMA Factory 600's run 190's. Agility has no place in roadracing. :bootyshak
Actually that statement is only 66.6% true.

AMA racers might run a 190/55/17 or a 190/60/17 on a 5.5x17" rim but they don't run 190/50/17's on a 5.5" rim.

A 190/50/17 really needs a 6.0x17" rim.

for the street , run the 180
if you want to run the 190 on the track, but if you are not up there then it is prob overkill at this stage, your turn in will be affected , but mid corner grip will increase ... tradeoffs

I ran a 190/50 Metzeler Rennsport a few summers ago, I got a good deal on a set, but I couldnt tell any differance in the handling.

180 is Highly reccommended for the 600RR, you will lose flickability through turns and the Esses.

Have you tried it?

I ask because I lost nothing! Albeit I don't run in the expert group, but mid to upper pack of intermediate (at trackdays).

Ive ran both and I much prefer a 180 on my 600 race bikes and a 190 on my 1k race bikes........

most WERA expert riders run 190s, thats what my race team runs and they work better on the track than 180s

Well I know of about 20 or so in the Mid Atlantic that run 180s bro....... Ive ran 180s on my race bikes for the last 8 years.
