2008 with 23k miles. Been having an issue starting late last season that has unfortunately grown worse. Shifting from 1st to 2nd under moderate to hard acceleration results in a slip into neutral. At first I thought it was operator error but it's happening almost every ride now. After some research on .net and other forums, this is a result of a bent shift fork which could be a result of power wheelies in 2nd. I've never wheelied this bike so I'm assuming PO was reckless with it. I haven't seen any writeups specific to the 07+ RR so I'm wondering if anyone has a manual or has attemped to replace the shift fork(s?) on this model. If I keep my toe up on the shift lever when going into second theres no slip, I just keep it up, slightly let off throttle then lower it and shift into 3rd. I'd rather fix it before creating any more damage. Any insight on this issue/fix is appreciated.

I should also state the slippage only occurs 1->2.

Got a spare engine if interested. Sorry cant rly help with the **** issues. Pm ben on the forum i believe he has replaced shifter forks. Ill see if i can find his username and pm ya.

I appreciate it. Kind of bummed about this as I've read from other model bikes it's labor intensive- dropping engine, breaking case, etc. I don't have the tools or equipment to perform the surgery myself so I'm hoping someone chimes in for the 07+ and tells me its easier than what I've read. Others have stated a new engine is almost cost effective if going through a mechanic to replace forks.

do you preload the shifter before shifting?


changing shift forks is a very invasive job. you'll have to drop the engine and split the cases to get at them.

Ah this is what I've read much to my dismay. I have been preloading the 1 to 2nd shift since stumbling upon that advice elsewhere and it has helped. I've also done an earlier shift to avoid it being under too much load. As long as I successfully make the jump without slipping back into neutral will it prevent further damage?

preloading the shifter is what causes bent forks.

trying to move the shifter when everything in the transmission is locked up under load is putting force on the forks.

stop doing that.

and keeping force on the shifter while riding (like you have suggested) will wear things out even worse. the forks are meant to rest in the dogs, not to be forced against the side of them


you should get this fixed, if you keep doing what you're doing you're likely to ruin the dog as well (assuming the issue is with the fork and not the dog). if the issue was originally with the dog, what you're doing is damaging the fork.


either way. if i were in your shoes i'd be skipping second all together. get onto a different fork asap

Appreciate the advice...glad I posted here rather than stick with my random internet findings. To my understanding theres only 3 forks, which corresponds to what gears?

i can't tell you for sure. but the order of gears on the counter shaft is first, fifth, fourth, third, sixth, second

so i'd imagine first and fifth are on one fork, fourth and third are on another, and sixth and second are on the last. but don't quote me on that.

So clutchless upshifting would wear it out too? I usually clutchless 2>6 since it feels a lot smoother than using the clutch. However have to slightly preload the shifter.

you can clutch less upshift without preloading the shifter. just don't press on the pedal until you have backed off the throttle
