Early prototypes of motorcycle helmets were invented at the beginning of the last century when motorcycles became more powerful developing higher speeds. As a result, riding became fairly dangerous. First helmets were sewn from pieces of thick leather offering some abrasion protection but providing almost no impact protection in the case of a collision. After analyzing the cases of motorcycle riders with head injuries, British neurosurgeon Hugh Cairns offered to add a hard shell to the construction of a helmet for additional head protection.
