So...I’ve been running a -1, +2 in 520 setup for a couple of years now. However I am really considering changing it up to a 0, +2. My main reason did this is to get a bit more top speed back and take some of the jerkyness out of first gear since this bike is really only a street bike.

I really like the hard pull of 1st gear with my current setup, but for the street it would be more “comfortable” to ride.

Have any of you guys ridden a 0, +2 setup? Will I be happy going this route?

I'm a bit of a gear(ing) freak, and have changed gearing ratios on every street bike I've owned....except for this one.

I've used stock (or 16/41-42) for 3 changes of chain and sprockets.

I don't ride much in first gear, don't enjoy the "hyperreactive" feel of the bike's response in first gear-high rpm riding.

I don't ride at high rpm's until in 2nd/3rd gear, and open road with little traffic ahead.

With stock ratio, if I need to move along the highway at less than 70 mph I can do so in 6th gear, and the 2ndary injectors are closed....maybe saving a bit of fuel...not much!

From a gearing weirdo, "stock ratios work good for me".

I’ve been running 0, +2 for a couple years now and love it. It’s a nice bump up from stock without changing the rpms much or losing too much on the top end.
I also agree with Tary, though, 1st is almost useless on the street even with stock gearing.

Or you could do -1, +0 for lighter weight.

Personally, I think -1 +2 is perfect, as with that gearing I get nice power wheelies in first, easy clutch ups in second, and 150mph in 6th.

Do you really need to go faster than 150?

im also very interested in this, i do mostly town riding and would rather slow acceleration down . it is very rare i exceed 70 MPH.

would 0, +2 be better?

1 tooth on the front sprocket is roughly equivalent to 3 on the rear.

I’m going to go -1, +1. I still want the acceleration but a bit more top end. I’ll report back when I get it changed and some riding time in.

Currently running -1, +2

Rear sprocket is the Vortex 252 44t, trying to find a good kit for a decent price. Need the front/rear sprocket and a chain.

Thanks for any help.

I replaced the the OEM with this kit from STG:

Driven Chain and sprocket kit

get any combo you want for a solid price. Add me to the list that stayed with stock. I like riding on the highway at a reasonable RPM and I think the bike has plenty of low range in standard config as is.

Finally got my bike back from getting a bunch of work done.

I went with the -1, +1 setup. For a street bike I like it WAY more than the -1, +2 setup. It’s less jerky on the street yet still pulls just about as hard as it did before. My quick shifter runs smoother, RPMs stay a bit lower on the hwy too. I am very happy with it.

But to address your question, the sprocket tooth count has the most significant affect throughout the drivetrain, which is primarily what this thread is about.

Sure the 520 is a lighter chain, and has a small exponential gain over a 525, but not a major change. Someone can correct me if I’m wrong..or if you just want to argue to boost your self-esteem...have at it.

It's easier to find the 520kits. lots of options
525 doesn't have the same gearing availability....
this was the reason for me.
I don't think any street rider would ever notice a difference in 520/525, but considering that one has to search for 525 kits vs nearly every vendor making it very easy to find plenty of options for 520 (gearing, color, brand) with the SAME price, the decision was easy.
