So I just purchased my first bike. It is an 04 600rr with 275 miles on it. Since it is still in its break-in period I figured that now would be the best time to change to synthetic if I wanted to.

What are the pro/cons for switching to synthetic and is it better for the bike?

I have heard lots of things both ways about it.

If you change your oil regularilly, conventional is a great oil to use.

However, synthetics have their benifits. they do protect better because of he way the molicules are structured by having a higher surface tension. They also resist evaporation much much better than conventionals and will typicly last quite a bit longer than conventionals which will require less replacement.

for starters. but they are more expensive. but if youlook at how often you'd have to replace the oil, it balances itself out.

2004 CBR600RR with 275miles?? Someone go call the guy who owned that bike, POSER! I know a guy who has about that many miles on a 2003. We all bag on him and he tells us he doesn't like to ride on the road. But...he has never been to a track either. He then tells me my bike looks plain just silver and his is hot being black with silver wings. One word, POSER! It would worry me buying a bike that has the same ole dino oil sitting in it for years. Change that crap out quick!

My buddy who builds engines for a living and has been for 15+years says to wait until at least 3k. On the other hand, I didn't wait that long on my Audi A4, changed to synthetic at 600mi. I have had that car for 10 years with no ill effects from switching to synthetic. Many people on here have changed early to synthetic on their RR and haven't had issues. I don't know...but it fell into place anyway for me to change to synthetic at 3k since the bike isn't due for an oil change till around then anyway. The dealer did my first service and they won't put synthetic in that early, they warn against it and will note it on the receipt if I have them do it anyway against Honda's suggestion. Then that gives Honda a BS excuse to screw me on the lubrication warranty issue should it come up even if it isn't truely related. CYA
