Hey guys just joined today. I need help trying to figure out this charging issue. My stator keeps going out I replaced it like 4 times already. After I replace it, it works good for about a year until it burns out again and doesn’t recharge the battery. I’m not sure what it could be. Any tips would be appreciated.
Yes, stator/RR are usually replaced together. Measure your voltage at the battery with the bike running and applying throttle. It should read around 14.1v and not change much when revving.
The good news is the RR is fairly cheap and easy to replace.
This might be case of cheap RR overloading stator. Old shunt-circuit regulators run stator at 100% output and splits off just enough to power electronics and dumps rest to ground. This heats up RR and stator tremendously and melts insulation off windings (not to mention robs power and hurts MPG). Leads to the shorts you found earlier and stator stops putting out sufficient voltage to charge battery.
Very common problem on Ducatis and Aprilias with same solution
Best to upgrade your RR to latest series-circuit with SH-847 regulator. It only draws as much current from stator as needed by bike's electronics rather than driving it at 100% like old shunt-circuit regulators. Startor runs so much cooler and doesn't short out. RR itself is also much cooler and you can touch it after a ride!!!
I can vouch for roadstercycle. The series R/Rs he sells are top notch. Cured all the electronic ills on my Buell 1125R. On this bike the R/R (a Ducati part) was located behind the motor under the seat. On these twins that's one very hot environment. Removed stock and mounted the new one behind the license plate. Haven't had a problem since and runs at 14.1v all day long.
Yeah, it's amazing how much cooler it runs! No need for giant heatsink. I actually chopped mine down to fit underneath battery as spacer since I went to smaller lithium unit.
