Right this is on a race bike, so no lights to drain the power etc etc

  • My trickle charger shows my battery is full.
  • My lap timer has a volt meter for the battery and shows 14.2v.
  • When i start the bike, it starts fine. Possibly a tiny bit slow to initially turn over, but starts fine.
  • I go out and ride for twenty minutes, the volts show 13.5v throughout the ride, and the bikes is spot on.
  • When i return to pits and try to start the bike again, i get nothing. Ignition is on, fuel pump primed etc, and battery still showing 13.5-14.2v, but when i hit the button, it drops to around 6-7v while the button is pressed.
  • I put it back n the charger for 20 minutes and it shows the battery is full, then it'll start again.
Do we think this is a battery issue, or possibly a starter relay/motor issue?

When it starts it starts fine, so i'm possibly thinking the starter motor is ok. When it won't start, i don't hear the relay click either, so could that mean there is not enough power to make it click? Pointing to a battery issue...

The battery is only 6 months old, and is an expensive gel battery. I know you can get bad ones from new, and this has never been the best even from new looking back, but what do people think???

I'm in the process of getting another battery to lend to see, but want advice int he meantime please.

Thanks.

Bongo, I think you might have a bad battery. If you want to check the simple way of making sure its not the charging system, take off the negative cable. If the bike is still running the charging system should be fine.

^^^You might want to check this out and get in on this while there is still a few batteries left.

cheers mate, although i'm in the UK.

So you're saying, start the bike, then disconnect the neg from the battery while the bike is running?? If it stops, it's a bad battery, if it keeps running it's something else?

LMAO.... No meng, If the bike turns OFF when you disconnect the negative, the charging system is at fault.

What I'm telling you do is a quick check for the charging system. Its a check I used to do on cars. I think it should still apply the same to this system.

There isn't really a good way to check if you have a bad cell, especially since its a gel battery. I'm assuming its one of those maintenence free batteries.

BTW I know your from UK... I can't root for Liverpool, Go MAN U!!!!

No problem meng!

I forgot to mention. If the battery is bad/crap it won't hold a charge or provide sufficient power when you put a load on it.

So borrow one of mate's battery or if you have an extra one laying around, swap it with the gel one. See if the bike starts a few times with the temporary battery.

This should be enough to figure out what your root cause of the problem.

Thats retarded.... It might of turned out to just a loose connection somewhere... If you took everything out and tightened it back you might of solved the 'mystery' problem lol.

Had to put a hold on this for a few days. My exhaust developped a huge hole in a crash on the test day before the race where this all started. A temp repair to get through the weekend failed so it's in Blueflame at the moment, which is less than a mile away from mine, getting Tig welded. Titanium pipes, so took it there, but £40 for a big repair seems good to me! Get it back tomorrow then i can run the bike again.

I have a feeling that when i run it again, and run it up to temp, it might fail again. The thought being that a bad connection will increse resistance a lot when it gets hot, but when cold it stsrts ok.

If that happens, i know it's a hot problem and can work around that. I think the s/motor will be coming off tomorrow/wednesday and i'll strip it and give it the once over.

It probably wouldn't be so much of an issue except i race in an endurance series, so you start the bike to get out on the track, then turn it off, and run across the track to the bike for the start, when, if it won't start, i'm screwed!!

Quick update for you then, AS IT'S NOW FIXED WOO HOOOOOO:banger::banger::cruising::toothy4::bounce:

The relay was spot on, the battery was spot on, the charging system was spot on. I had the battery tested etc and it was all good.

It turned out that once the starter motor gets hot, the internal resistance increases, and the brushes, being on an 8 year old starter, have got a little tired these days, and need to use a little more power to get the motor working.

I actually had a 12v6AH battery in the bike, unknown to me, 3AH less than the standard fitment, so despite working fine, it just didn't have the ooomf to start the bike. I bought the right sized battery and it's spot on!

So it was the battery, although the battery was working fine, which i pretty much had worked out, which was the thing that was so hard to understand!

Thanks for everyone's input and help on this. 'Tis the very reason i use forums when everyone helps out and does their bit to get things sorted!
