Why are the screws on throttle housing so tight? I'm trying to put on Rizoma sport grips and I can't, because of these two screws. Additionally, they are made out of the weakest metal known to man, thus are stripping in my attempts. Annoying. Help.

I guess this is more of venting and a rant than anything else.

They shouldn't be that hard to remove! And why are you removing them anyway? just cut off the old grip and slide the new one on...

I'm installing Rizoma aluminum grips. They become the new throttle tube and need the cam inserted into the throttle housing. BUT, I can't open it up, because the screws made out of cheese are in too tight. In other posts, members have had to drill slots in order to use a flat head because they stripped it. Its annoying.

How bad have the screws gotten? You may be able to take a flat head and give it a tap to seat it into two of the flutes in the head of the screw...

I managed to get mine out without much trouble but if they stripped I would have tried an ez-out followed by the slot/screwdriver method.

They haven't stripped yet, but I feel them giving. But seriously, why are they soooo tight. They are cranked beyond anything else on this bike. Is Honda in the process of using loctite red on the throttle housing?

When I worked at a dealership, They were always like that for some reason. We would just put the screw driver on it and hit it a few times with a hammer and that would normally take care of it.

Mine stripped to when replacing the clip-on. Had to Dremel a slot into one of them to remove it.
When installing the brand new replacements one of them started to strip as well.
Crappy cast material.

Why knock it with a hammer? Is that to break it loose from the casting? Never actually done that. I'm charging my dremel, but would like to avoid cutting that area.

So is it already stripped. If not try to tighten it just a little, little, teeny, tiny, bit... that worked for me to break off the whatever seal that GOD put on there... if it moved a bit, then try going ccw... might work..

it was explained to me that the metals are different and something about that some how makes them fuse, so you hit it like hardracing said and it releases it. i may be remembering that incorrectly, and it also may have been explained to me incorrectly however hitting it did make all my problems go away.

Different metals placed next to each other like that experience what is colloquially know as cold welding, what actually occurs is galvanic corrosion.

Depending on the two metals this could be minor enough to grab the bolt or bad enough to completely destroy the two metals, thankfully honda try and minimise it as much as possible.
The only place (that I know of) where two dissimilar metals placed next to each other won't experience galvanic corrosion is where one of them is gold (hence gold plating on all the contacts in your electrical crap).

It's to break the seal in the threads...same principle with tapping the side of a lid that you have trouble removing.
Nico hit it right on the head...pun intentional.
There was some corrosion present in the threads from condensation. The alloys they use to cast the screws are not necessarily the highest quality metals.

It usually seats it into the Screw a little better.
Gets a better bite.


There are also Impact screw drivers, that have a built in ramp, and when you smack the hammer, it pushes IN on the screw and backs it out. Pretty handy tool.

I actually used an impact driver, but due to the limitations on room it was quite difficult. Ultimately, I got those [email protected]*n things out by pure luck. Took forever. Now, I'm off to go buy some hexbolts. Thank you guys for your help. Appreciate what this forum provides.
