Swapping Fork Springs?

1335 Views 12 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Blade-Runner
A few questions here.

- How hard is it to change out fork springs and oil?
- What tools are need?
- What weight oil will be best for me (180lbs w/o gear, trackdays)

Thanks,
Kevin

Depends on your abilities, it might seem like cake to some and brain surgery to others. You have to remove the front wheel, brakes, fender and forks to change the oil. Just doing the springs can be done on the bike. Tools...nothing really special. Use stock wt. oil, use your damping adjusters to suit.
check the service manual, it has the fork removal and disassembly procedure...

Ok I'm a retard :banghead:

LOL, I didn't even think of that.
G
what is the best way to hold the front of the bike up to remove/install the forks?
Pin style stand that lifts from the bottom of the triple clamp assembly.
BTW, if you wanna just remove the springs and not worry about lost oil. PLace a flat-bladed screw driver against the top of the spring coil, litterally screw the spring out of the fork. the screwdriver will shunt the majority of fork oil back into the fork AND you won't drip oil everywhere.

FWIW I started out ssimply swapping the oil/springs. Broke down and rebuilt the forks completely...very much an improvement over simple spring swapping. I used .95 I believe. I am 195lbs b4 gear and I ave plenty of spring adj. available for me. Hope this helps somewhat. 8)
You can if your careful, not use a stand and do 1 spring at a time. The bike will want to lean to the right so a well placed jackstand will help.
I have the "New" Pit Bull front stand. I think I'll try and do this myself (oil, springs and valves).
blade-runner, post back after you do it, I too intend on doing a spring swap myself (first)...
No problem. I'm ordering the springs and stuff today.
Yep to many wheelies, for me. No slamming but lots of wheelies and Im gonna revalve, oil, and spring soon. Hook us up with the play by play. Try to get some pics too.
No problem, I'll have the springs in next week.
