The Kickstand Pivot [video]

This was mentioned in another thread, so I thought I'd post a little video clip and write-up of how it's done. It is incredibly easy once you get a feel for it. Even in the company of folks who have been riding for a long time, you will find that most of them do not know how to do it and you are sure to get lots of oohs and ahhs. (And it's usually a lot quicker/easier than backing your bike out, so it's very practical too!)

Windows Media Player video (there's no audio, so don't bother turning up the volume):

http://www.structive.com/hosted/600rr/kickstand_pivot.wmv

Basic steps (works for me, others might do it slightly differently):

1. Make sure there is adequate space on either side (right and left) of the bike for it to pivot freely without hitting anything.

2. Approach bike from its left side. Standing right up against it, turn bars to full-lock right.

3. Maintaining grip on the bars, pull the bike toward you until the entire bike is off the tires and being supported solely by the kickstand. You may want to practice this step several times until you get the hang of it and feel comfortable.

4. You will need to find a "balance point" where the bike feels easy to rotate about. I have found that this (somewhat surprisingly) occurs when the nose of the bike is pointed slightly downward. Once you've found that point, shuffle backwards in small steps, rotating the bike about the kickstand until it's pointing the direction you want.

5. Soak in the admiration of bystanders, and hop on!

:D

Dave

DISCLAIMER: I take no responsibility for you dropping the bike in attempting to perform this squidrific maneuver! :p :lol2:

Would this procedure not cause the kick stand to bend due to all the weight of the bike on such a small area? I'm worried that it may cause something to break or bend in the stand area if not immediately, over time.

maybe over time but not immediately...

one of my friends did it on his 929 for over a year and still good.

Well i guess doing it in moderation would be fine...but its still a great manuever nontheless...and by the way Quassi...out of all the 600rrs i have seen here post...i like ur mods the best....not over the top...just right
cheers dave. Looks slightly different than the way i do it, but you seem to be well in control of it. I shall go practice.

Interesting. I'd mess up and drop the damn thing.

What was the point in that.
Depending on the situation (and as you know, every situation is different in motorcycling), it can be easier/quicker to pivot the bike and ride out of a parking spot than it would be to back the bike out of the spot. Especially if you would be backing the bike out against an incline.
I thought EVERYONE did this.......... =\
i thought only SQUIDS do this........ :bitchslap:
i dont understand why spinging the bike like that would be called squid like maybe im just missing a joke but that is a good move i used it today when my bike was at the shop i didnt feel like backing up a hill so i just did this...
well i do it so sign me up for being a squid.
tool
i grab under the tail on the right side and the left grip w/ bars at full left lock. i feel i have a lil more control this way cause im also able to rest it against my thigh if need be. im squid-a-lisious!

anyways been doin it for almost a year now and kickstand is just fine

if your gonna preactice its beeter to practice with an empty tank at first i think. theres a big difference in empty and full to me atleast

Gotta understand that the kick stand on the 600rr is very strong and the tip of it is bigger vs like my 2000 R1. Few times I tried on the R1 and I can see the tip almost bend and I never do it again. On the 600rr it got great strong tip. I'm 5'7 so backing the bike up is very difficult, it like paddling a boat but not going anywhere just the tip of my feet are touching the grounds.
I'm a squid... Nice vid Q
im with corleone...... i'd prob mess up and drop it ...... unless i really really need to im not doin it..
:lol2: You guys crack me up! You're making this seem a lot more controversial / difficult than it actually is! And in case you aren't familiar with my wry humor, the comments about doing this solely to impress folks and get "oohs and ahhs" are stated with tongue planted firmly in cheek. Bottom line, whether you think it's squidly or not (and dviii appears to be in the minority, if not the only one, in thinking this), it's a highly useful maneuver with many applications.

Oh, I've been doing this on my ol' SV650 as well the RR -- no kickstand durability issues. Granted, the RR is mostly a track bike and I only go on street/backroads rides a couple times a month, so I probably don't perform this maneuver as often as others, but I know many folks who have been doing this for years and have never had any problems.
i think it's good for short riders, but regardless, it just looks like... i dunno dumb...

sue me for having an opinion. wait in this country that may be possible.... :bitchslap:
Nice video, would you have still shown it if you dropped it? :lol2:
It's easy and beats shuffling backwards. Also chicks think its a cool trick!
