I've run Bridgestone BT002, Michelin Pilot Race, Dunlop 208 GP, Metzler Racetech and Pirelli SuperCorsa. In order of preference Pirelli, Metzler, Bridgestone, Dunlop then Michelin.

Not trying to sound condescending here.....

What level of track skills are you at? Are you a newb or are you running in A group??? The fact that you are asking this question would imply that you are closer to the former.

Yes, can get tires with huge amounts of grip (e.g. the Metzeler slicks mentioned above) but if you're a newb track rider, it would probably be a huge waste of money. High-performance street rubber (e.g. Michelin Pilot Power, Metzeler Sportec) would suit you fine until your skills got better, then go to a treaded "race" tire (e.g. Michelin Power Race), then go to slicks.

^^^^^^^^^ agreed, you should look at a street/track type tire like the Pirelli Diablo Corsa III, Metzeler Sportec M3 or Michelin Pilot Power 2CT, these tires are the closest thing you can get to a track duty only rubber & lasts longer which means more track time & a happy wallet, once you exceed the limits of these tires can give you you can upgrade to a track tire & appreciate the difference.

how many trackdays have you done?

I've been told that the Corsa III ties would overheat if one were to push them on a track. They heat up fast, and are more suited for agressive street use, not track UNLESS you are in a slow group. Since the 2CT tires are very alike, i'm not convinced that they would be a good tire to use on a track. Maybe Road America since it's just so damn fast but...

I can't do a ton of track events a year, since the only two tracks i know around here are Road America and Blackhawk Farms Raceway. Money is no object here as i'm lucky to do... 4 a year? maybe 5?

Ive ran Diablo corsa's (HATED them),Bt002's,dunlop 208gp,207rr's,pilot powers...

and i would go with a street/track day tire first then if you NEED a track tire the Dunlop 208gp's have GREAT FEEL and Feedback. ANd the cost is 279.00 a set.

But i honestly went just as fast on pilot powers.

Dont waste your money on slicks. You need warmers, need to set the bike up for them and no offence but you'll never use all they offer (neither would I)

Unless you get the new Dunlop Track Day slicks. They are Basicly 208gp's with no tread. $299 a set.

They arent on the website yet but if you wan tthem just ask about them.

Next time i go i will be using Dunlop Qaulifiers. More grip than most can use,no warmers needed and wear pretty good.

DOT tires are said to be good well into 'Advanced' times. I know I ran a set of Q's at an Intermediate level and had zero problems. Unless you're fast, and I mean really fast, I would just run a good street tire.

Diablo Corsa III tires overheat? dude that tire is a spec tire for the World Superstock 600 class & they usually push their bikes hard in 15 or more laps, that tire is more track oriented than it's predescessor the Diablo Corsa. Pirelli techs recommend 31F 29R tire pressure for the track.

the Michelin PP 2CT also ranks up there with the Diablo Corsa III i believe both of these tires will be able to handle whatever you can dish out (unless you're Hayden or Rossi) :D , try them out for yourself before you pass judgement, with today's tire technology the boundary between a street & a track tire is slowly diminishing.

Hi Knightslugger, this is what I'd use for a track-day rubber, remember the Hypersport racing slick is only good for a few heat cycles. Their designed with one use in mind - stick like glue, for one use, then throw away, this makes them expensive!
The 2CT would be a good choice if you don't want to change your rubber as often, and if your not really, really fast the street range will heat up much faster.
Slicks would require the use of a tyre warmer, to get 'em up to heat...
Some guys go very fast on 'street' type rubber, only the extremely quick go for the slicks, or hypersport. Heres a link for the Michelins, happy trails... and keep it upright!
P.S - take note of the tread pattern, the hypersport is very low of on tread, not for use in the wet. Also Metzler make a good totally track orientated tyre also.

I run a slowA/fastB pace and have always just used street tires. Pilot Powers, Pirelli Corsa mainly. They do FINE even at a fast pace. I will be trying the 2CT versions next...
Good choice! Thats what I'm fitting next...Michelin pilot race 2CT. Im sticking to standard rim sizes/profiles- 120/70 front and 180/55.
-not sure if theres any better options than these.
They should serve my purposes and intentions quite adequately.

Are you guys talking about the 2CT road tire, or the Power Race [2CT as well?]? I took a look at the link TonyBarron gave and i looked at both tires. according to the website, the 2CT only gets average rating for track use. (3 out of 5). Then i looked at the Pilot Power Race and the decision guide that Michelin provides and that was incredibly helpful! Average track temps, dry, long straights with wide corners, 100+ KM race distance suggests a race MS/MS while the same track conditions at a track like BFR they suggest a S/MS compound.

So far, Michelin have been more helpful than Pirelli in my decision for next year. Even still, if someone will be slapping on a set of CorsaIII for their next TD, FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS EVIL PLEASE post up your thoughts! If you can get some technical data (like tire temp after session, aprx. wear, Pressure variance, type of inflation gas used, etc) that would be invaluable information for many of us!

Try a 2CT Michelin, or Metzeler.
Im going to try the new sportec M3 or M1.
I just dont follow the thought that Michelin are the best, without
trying the competitors.

a link to their website.

Cheers.

pick up a Aug2006 issue of Superbike Magazine they have a small article about the Diablo Corsa III which might be of help to you, regarding track tire pressure Pirelli technicians mentioned in the magazine to use 31F & 29R, use an inert gas to inflate the tires (nitrogen) so the tire pressures remain constant even when the tires get hot.

Pretty sure everyone meant the Pilot Powers, not the race. Of course the Powers didn't get 5 outta 5 for a track tire, it is not a track dedicated tire; however, it is still plenty for 90% of track goers.

Dot tires seem to be working just fine for this fella... of course these SuperCorsas are a step up form the Powers, but still not a 100% track tire.
