This is the video I watched to help me with my IT install (At 3:15 your first question will be answered). You can use your heat shield but I recommend removing it because it looks UGLYYYY. I've been riding without a heat shield for 7 months now and no signs of melting fairing or tail light, at least not yet?

PS. I had to remove my exhaust in order to take out the heat shield.

thanks... but is that for a TST light or a Tripage? not sure if they are both same in length
What kind of sucks, I followed the video for my installation and cut right across that opening as shown in the Tripage video, but after the install, I realized that almost an inch or more was cut than necessary. I have a 2011 and am not sure if anything changed, but it definitely wasn't a flush install. The video was followed to the letter.
All integrated tail lights for our year should have the same shape and length. You can always line up the tail light to the black piece of plastic that you cut to have an idea on where it lines up.

Im sorry, I exaggerated a bit. I had one picture in my head in comparison to reality. This is how it looks.

ok, so I installed my TST light last night. haha I actually found the how far your suppose to be from the heatshield hole and towards the tail...

it's should be 17mm. (I read the instructions)

key note: it's always better to start slow and cut less, then to cut to much.
Yeah. I learned the hard way. Now I need a buffer in that space or spend 85 on a new tray plastic to cut .
A little after the fact, but for anyone that reads this, THEY ARE NOT THE SAME SIZE. Tripage is a little longer than TST's. If you cut too much, contact Bart @ TST Industries and he can sell you a plastic cover that will fill in the gap.

I'm taking a hunch but did u cut to much? I was about 1mm off... I know it wasn't the cleanest job I wish I could have done but still a good job..
A little late, but here is my tst diy video:

No, I cut it perfect for the Tripage. Then I sold it and bought the TST. But since the TST is shorter, I had a gap because of the Tripage. So I contacted Bart @ TST Industries and he sold me something that covers the gap.
