Yes, it's quite shocking, but the locals aren't going to change. Keep in mind a lot of Japanese people don't even know about this - it's a very localized practice. Even eating whale, which was done across most of the nation, isn't as popular as it once was and a lot of people don't touch it. The Japanese government wants to protect traditions - hahaha, they mean votes - so the whale hunt continues under the guise of research. The dolphin hunt is so unknown that there's no need to even protect it. In the area most famous for it, Taiji, I understand there are signs warning of rockslides to keep tourists out of areas where they might snap a picture, but there's one for you from a site detailing the hunt below. Oh, I've eaten whale at a good restaurant and have to say it wasn't particularly good, though not bad. The owner offered it to me as a "special gift" and so I couldn't very well refuse without causing enough offence that I probably wouldn't be able to go back.

Edit: By the way, in case you're wondering why the government wants to protect these rights, it's because rural votes count for more than urban votes in Japan, AND city voters hardly vote.

Yes, this happens in many parts of the world. Korea, there are places where they still skin cats alive and put them in boiling water. In Cambodia, there are places where the customes are to sacrifice one of every live stock of the grooms as a wedding ritual. I saw this on TV, the family dog got it too! They just slash their throat and let them bleed out. It was tough seeing the ole faithful dog get murdered like that, for nothing. My lady is Cambodian and she is from their. Not all Cambodians do this ritual. Only a select few in the country. In Japan, these paractices towards marine life are on a larger scale. Why do you think they have so much sushi? We have ripped on them for whale killings over the past decades also. It is the way they go about it that is wrong and the large numbers they kill at one time.
