I'm selling a ninja 250 with no title in hand. i bought the bike as is from a friend who was several years behind in registration and was going to use the bike as a track bike. discovered that motor needed replacement and was out of my budget. now i want to sell the bike with no title. what should i do? do i need to write a bill of sale? if anyone has done this, any help would be great. also i'm located in CA.

IIRC you only need a bill of sale. Write one up, reference the VIN, the parties involved and other typical things sale receipt items.

have a bill of sale and sold 'as-is without warranty' and then with the money in your hand and a copy of the bill of sale signed by both parties it's not your problem anymore. the buyer will have to go through the headache of getting it titled if they want to register it. you can warn them of this, but this usually falls under the 'buyer beware' topic
