I got in a "discussion" with my bradley gunner today about bikes and it was the same ol' story, friends of friends in high school always wrecked bikes and/or died on them, or my sisters brothers cousins friends aunts uncle died on a crotch rocket and u are to. Sure, I push the limits sometimes on the street and I understand the risk of it when I do, but those are fairly seldom instances, when i am riding normally I am as safe and responsible as I can be. U try to ride as responsibly as I can manage. I don't do wheelies down main street or down the highway as I know thats beyond my skill to do so safely (I know my limits on the street) AND I have a respect for our image as sport riders which I try to improve as much as I can with my interaction with other motorists on the road. That doesn't mean I ride semi-aggressively, I have come to the conclusion u have to to some degree in order to stay alive and keep the shiny side up. I pass vehicles who I think may not be able to see me or I suspect to be distracted (cell phone users anyone?). Riding is a risk I accept because I enjoy it more then almost anything in the world, its one of those things that if I had to explain it, u (the listener) wouldn't understand.

What do u say when someone gives u the "Your going to die on that thing." lecture.

Oh, and on a side note, this wasn't an arguement started in my best interests in mind, like someone afraid for your safety. This was one of those arguements started around people that don't ride and share the same opinion, basically to corner me and make me look like the "stupid private" that I apparently am.

The risk is too high and statisics don't lie either. It's a very dangerous hobby.

Also, stupid shows like "stupidbikes" just make us all look like wreckless a55holes.

Yes but the rider can significantly increase or decrease the risk.
You can ride fast or you can ride slow, but never ride in a hurry.

The risk on a "sportbike" is not different then the risk on a "cruiser" or any other bike for that matter.... We as riders know theres a risk everytime you get on that bike.
The risk increases with the person at the helm...if you ride like an idiot then you should already understand your risk just increased. Plain & simple!!!

When we hit the back road twisties for some aggresive fun, I UNDERSTAND that i am increasing my risks of crashin' & Burnin'!!
It doesn't matter if I'm on my RR or my cruiser, the same risk is involved!

sportbikes just have a bad rap, they always have and probably always will. Now you have irrresponsible stunters and people doing 100+mph wheelies down the road everywhere you look . That just gives the average people a better reason to hate sportbikes and tell you "your gonna die on that thing".

Just ride your bike and have fun and fuk what people say..your not going to change anybodys prespective about motorcycles.

I can't say that anyone has told me that I'm going to kill myself on my bike. Many of my friends and loved ones don't understand why I do it and they express concern, which I do appreciate.

My only response is that I wear my gear, pay attention, and ride safe; but that I take great joy in my riding. I also remind everyone that life is short and that eventually our time is up. My life may end while I'm on my bike, in my car, or any other number of times and places. There's not a whole lot I can do about that, short of locking myself up in my home. I truly believe that quality of life is important. And since I've been riding my quality of life has been better. I won't be giving that up any time soon.

Well it's pure ignorance for one reason or another. Either they assume you ride like an idiot or they assume all bikes are dangerous. I tell them that statics show that if I get into an accident it'll most likely be from an idoit driver turning left in front of me. So watch out for motorcycles.

because there is a lingering possibility that you will.

but its only from their conjecture. they think that all riders are squids, and of course the rationality of stupid ass drivers not paying attention to riders.

it all comes down to a motorcycle rider's persona of not being "protected enough", i.e. the protection that cars have (cage)

you should have come back with "you do realize you operate a tank right?"

but seriously... people that don't ride won't understand so there's no reason in trying to justify it to them, as if they even deserved the justification in the first place. But if necessary, I just say I ride extra defensive on the street and extra aggressive on the track and the two don't mix. MOST of the time if the person hassling me is NOT someone I feel I need to justify myself to, I just say "probably so" and change the subject.

I also like to throw out the point that just because they are always hearing about people dying on motorcycles doesn't mean everyone who crashes on a motorcycle dies. Most people have minor injuries if any... I can even use myself as an example... crashed on a track day and didn't have a scratch on me... I have yet to see any statistics proving that there are more per-capita accidents on motorcycles than cars so I won't believe it's true until I see it.

Smile, then ask em if theyre gonna come to the funeral. And tell em they have to dress up and say something nice.
if its someone you dont like, ask em if theyre gonna miss you.
If its old folks, or anyone who u know believes in God, tell them, thats why they should pray for you.

There are so many reasons to ride. Theres no comparison.
Even my boy who's paralysed froma motorcycle accident says he misses it and doesnt regret riding.
